Residential housing in urban areas Apartments and flats
Apartments are generally found close to the city centre. They are built to maximise space and are often home to young professionals working in the city. The buildings are often multi- storey in order to fit as many people into the area as possible. This is called high-density housing.

Terraced housing can be found close to the city centre and in housing estates. These houses usually have no front garden and the front door opens on to the street. In the inner city, this type of house was used in the oldest residential housing.
Semi-detached housing is usually found on the outskirts of a town or in housing estates. They are built as pairs of houses with a shared wall. Semi- detached houses typically have land, such as a garden or a driveway, around them.
Detached houses can be found in housing estates and on the outskirts of a town. They are free- standing buildings on their own site. Because there are fewer people living in a larger space, this is called low-density housing.
