When examining aerial photographs, we can identify the time of year at which the photograph was taken. The photograph above was taken during the summer.
• The trees are in full foliage. • The grass has been cut. • There are few shadows because the sun is high in the sky.
Other things you may see in a photograph taken in summer: • Cattle grazing in fields • Bales of hay/silage in fields.
Photographs taken in winter may show: • Trees that have lost their foliage • Ploughed fields • Longer shadows as the sun is low in the sky • An absence of animals in fields

Look at Figure 7.9. Answer the following questions in pairs: (a) Is the photo vertical or oblique? Explain how you made your decision.
(b) If a similar photo were taken in winter, describe and give the location of the differences you might expect to see.
