I will never forget meeting Jim. / Oh dear, I forgot to phone Claire. I wish and if only can be used to express regrets about the present or the past. To talk about the present, we use a past verb. I wish I had more money. / If only I were 20 years younger. To talk about the past, we use the past perfect. I wish I’d taken that job. / If only I hadn’t been driving so fast.
