modern architecture is ugly and that buildings are out of place in historical centres close to magnificent old buildings and beautiful squares. Though I understand this view and appreciate that there is some truth in it, I tend to disagree. First of all, it is important to remember that when many of these magnificent old buildings were built, they were probably seen as modern and unsuitable for the existing city landscape. People flock to Barcelona to see La Sagrada Familia, but many people would say that it is an ugly building. When the Eiffel Tower was built, there was uproar that such a hideous construction would ruin the beauty of Paris.
It is probably true that less time and money is spent on the construction of buildings nowadays. Centuries ago, it took years to build and furnish a cathedral and that is simply not possible now. However, that does not mean that modern buildings are ugly. In cities from London to Shanghai, there are wonderful examples of architecture that generations of people will grow to love. Modern buildings like airports will be viewed as works of art in the same way that medieval town halls and churches are today.
Certainly, I agree that some modern constructions like tower blocks and leisure centres do little to add to the appeal of the urban landscape, but generally speaking, I feel that it is unfair to claim that modern architecture is ruining cities.
