B Listen to three extracts. Match each with a picture from Exercise A. Write the letter in the space. Extract 1 Estate agent: Well, this is it – The Cedars. Client 1: Oh, it does look nice, doesn’t it? Estate agent: People’s first impressions of this property are always really good, and I have shown it to a few people already, I warn you. We’ll go inside in a moment, but just take a closer look at some of these shrubs and bushes. Mm, I can smell that jasmine from here.
Client 2: Those shrubs growing around by the gate, they’re magnolia, aren’t they? Estate agent: Yes, they certainly are. The lawn is absolutely beautiful, look. Frankly, it wouldn’t look out of place as the green on a top golf course. Can you see the fish pond over in the corner, there, too? I certainly wish I could get my lawn looking like this! When we’ve seen the house, I’ll show you the back garden – believe me, it’s …
Extract 2 Inspector: Oh, hello … hello. Workman: Hi. Can I help? Inspector: Yes, I’m here from health and safety. I’m a little bit later than I planned, I’m afraid.
Workman: Oh, right. Inspector: Can I just ask straightaway about that scaffolding there? I mean, has it been up long?
Workman: Mm, I’m not sure – about a week I think. Inspector: Really? Well, it doesn’t look as stable as it could. I noticed it as soon as I arrived. Anyway, I guess I’d better tell the right person.
Workman: Yes, the state of the scaffolding’s not really my business – you’ll need to speak to the foreman.
Inspector: Yes, of course. Where I can find the foreman?
Workman: He’s probably in his office now. That’s over there, look. See the portable cabin with the blue car by it? He’ll be in there. I’d take you over, but I’ve got to get on with …
Extract 3 Salesman: There are a number of advantages. Customer: Yes, but I think I’ve heard them all before. Salesman: In a house like this, having double glazing saves you money in the long term. It may cost you
money now, but I can guarantee you won’t be sorry you’ve had it put in.
Customer: But we’ve recently had the roof insulated and that was supposed to save us money. It won’t save us money if we then have to have double glazing as well.
Salesman: Well, it will. Having insulation is always a good idea. It stops heat escaping through the roof, which is the main source of heat loss. However, draughts come in through doors and windows too, and if that’s still happening, you don’t get the full benefit of the insulation. Good insulation and double glazing complement each other.
Customer: Mm. Salesman: What’s more, you’re pretty near the road here. I bet you can hear the traffic most of the time you’re in the house. You’d be amazed at the reduction in noise levels once you’ve had …

B Listen to a couple talking about buying an old house and check your ideas in Exercise A. Jenny: Hello. Dan: Hi, Jenny. Jenny: Oh, hi, Dan. Dan: So, did you go and see the house? Jenny: Uh huh. Dan: And? Jenny: Pretty good. Well, as good as most of what we’ve seen so far. It’d certainly be worth you checking out. I’ve put it on the ‘to see again’ list.
Dan: So, where is it exactly? I wasn’t really sure where Abbey Road was.
Jenny: It’s where we went to that party a few months ago. You know, that friend of Steve’s.
Dan: Mm, I vaguely remember the party, not the place though.
Jenny: You know when you come out of London Road station … onto London Road? Abbey Road’s kind of opposite, but just to the right. You walk up about 30 yards and then it’s opposite.
