Unit 5 Listening 1
B Listen to some students talking and tick each picture as you hear it mentioned. Female 1: Have you read the stories in the newspapers recently about how hard, or should I say how little, students work?
Unit 5 Speaking 2
A Guess the missing word in each of these examiners’ questions. Then listen and check. 1 Examiner: So, how do you spend your free time? 2 Examiner: Tell me about the free-time activities you enjoy.
3 Examiner: Have you taken up any hobbies in the last few years?
4 Examiner: Do you have a very active social life? 048
Male 1: Mm, I saw something about it. I didn’t really pay much attention.
Male 2: I haven’t heard anything. What have they been saying?
Female 1: Oh, you know, the usual thing about students going to one or two lectures a week and then spending the rest of their time sitting around drinking coffee and smoking or playing video games.
Female 2: It makes me really cross when I hear stories like that. They just say these things to sell their rags. I don’t think they even believe any of it’s true themselves.
Unit 5 Speaking 2
B Listen to some students answering the questions. Complete the sentences below with ONE word in each space. 1
Examiner: So, how do you spend your free time? Student: Mm, in different ways. I’m really into painting, so I spend a lot of my time in my studio or out painting in the countryside. Sometimes I just like spending time with friends – you know, having a drink or a meal out together.
2
Examiner: Tell me about the free-time activities you enjoy. Student: Well, I like to keep fit. I go running and I go to the gym two or three times a week. I guess my passion is martial arts. I do karate and judo. I’m pretty good at that – I have a black belt in karate. It’s not all exercise and sport, though. I go to the cinema a lot and I like other things that most people like, you know.
3
Examiner: Have you taken up any hobbies in the last few years?
Student: Um, yes, I have. I started doing yoga about nine months ago. I like to look after myself and yoga’s very healthy. I stopped eating meat at that time too. I suppose I’m a bit of a health fanatic really. Apart from that, I’m very keen on music. I play violin and I’m in an orchestra – just an amateur one – but I really love it.
4
Examiner: Do you have a very active social life? Student: Oh, I wouldn’t say that. To tell the truth, I quite like staying in these days. I never was a party animal. I enjoy getting some takeaway food and watching a good movie on TV.
Male 2: Yeah, but you do sit around drinking coffee all day. You never go to your lectures.
Female 2: Oh, ha ha! Seriously, I think I work as hard as most people that have a full-time job. I have eight lectures a week and then at least two assignments. The lectures take up twelve hours and then the assignments anything from another six to ten hours, once I’ve done all the research.
Male 1: Yeah, I think in the past students had things a bit easier. You know, they had bigger grants and they didn’t have to worry about being in debt at the end of their course. Most students I know have to do a part- time job now on top of all the study.
Female 1: That’s right. I mean, I do around 20 hours of study and then work another 15. That’s pretty much a full-time job. I usually work Saturday lunchtime too. I have to say, I’m exhausted most of the time.
Male 2: Ah yes, but the average person doesn’t see studying as real work. You’d have a job to convince Joe Public that you’re doing a full-time job.
Female 1: I didn’t say I was doing a full-time job. I just said that I work a lot of hours in the week.
Male 2: No, you said that … Male 1: OK guys, calm down. Female 2: So, do you really think we do more work than students did in the past?
Male 1: Well, like I said, I think they had it a bit harder. My dad talks about when he was a student and it’s all about how everything had to be done without computers or the internet, and how much time he had to spend in the library. I’m so glad we can study a lot of things online these days.
Female 1: Yeah, I spend most of my time in the computer lab. When I’ve finished writing essays, I just email them to my lecturer. My mum had to print hers out and take them the lecturer’s office herself.
Male 1: I have to say that I do worry about the amount of debt I’ll accumulate. I worked out that I might owe around 10 or 12 thousand pounds by the time I’ve
