We’ve picked out a few that we’d like to know a bit more about. Do you have a map or a plan of the area so you can show where exactly each hotel is? They all say ‘walking distance’ to the beach and so on, but then they would, wouldn’t they?
Travel agent: Yes, I’ve got a map and a more detailed plan of the harbour area. Let me see … OK, here it is. Now, which hotels are you looking at? Customer 2: Can you tell us about this one first – Las Gaviotas. It looks really nice.

Travel agent: Yes, I like that one. Las Gaviotas means The Seagulls. I’ve stayed there myself and it’s lovely. It’s here … not right on the beach, but very close. Frankly, the hotels right on the beach can be a bit noisy. I mean, the noise from the beach front and restaurants at night. Las Gaviotas is between the beach and the old village. Customer 1: So, how far is that to walk to the beach? Travel agent: Oh, less than five minutes. Really – maybe three or four minutes. Customer 2: And about the same into the old village? Travel agent: Less – about two minutes. You really do have the best of both worlds with this hotel. Now, which is the second one you wanted to know …
Extract 2 Voice: Right, so here we are in the main square. You can look round by yourselves in a moment, but first let me tell you something about the buildings and monuments around us – you’ll enjoy looking round far more if you know what you’re looking at. There’s plenty more information in the guide book too. Right, first of all, this statue right beside us is Thomas Mendelssohn. He was the founder of the children’s hospital, which we will visit later. He was responsible for many other projects and developments in the town and he’s a very important figure. The statue was erected in 1954.

OK, to our left, at the end of the square, is the museum. I’ll show you round the museum a little bit later, but you can have a quick look now if you like. Incidentally, just behind the museum is Thomas Mendelssohn’s office. He worked there for almost all of the time he was resident in the town. You can get to it through a little lane by the side of the museum. At the other end of the square – to our right, that is – is the library. It’s fairly modern compared with some of the buildings in the square, but worth having a look at. The old library was badly damaged by fire in the 1960s and it was decided that building a new
