SUN CARE 41

Table 1: Examples of Clinical Trials Performed on Products that Blend in Our Fullerene Raw Materials for Cosmetics. Item

Subject Skin Whitening 18 Women Application Method

2 times, morning and evening, applied to entire face (0.4 ml), fullerene- blended cosmetic lotion.

Anti-Wrinkle 23 Women

2 times, morning and evening, fullerene-containing cream or placebo cream applied to a specified half of the face (0.3 g).

Prevention of Pimples

Pore Improvement

5 Men 6 Women

2 times, morning and evening, applied to entire face (0.4 ml),

fullerene-blended gel. 10 Women

Rough Skin Improvement

5 Men 5 Women

2 times, morning and evening, applied to entire face, fullerene-blended lotion. 2 Months

2 times, morning and evening,

applied 0.1 g to indicated locations on the inside of the forearm using a cotton swab.

Suppression of Sebum Oxidation

3 Men 8 Women

Foundation blended or not blended with fullerenes, applied to a specified half of the face (40 mg).

4 Days Time 8 Weeks Evaluation Method

Measurement of the melanin index of the cheek using a spectroscopic colorimeter.

8 Weeks

Analysis of items such as the wrinkle area ratio using replica two- dimensional analysis.

8 Weeks

Measurement of the number of pimples using doctor findings,

photographic images, etc.

Measurement of pore score using VISIA.

Measurement of the TEWL of rough skin sites using a tape strip, and calculation of the barrier recovery ratio.

6 Hours

Collection and extraction of sebum, and measurement of the amount of peroxidized sebum using a DPPP reagent.

Significant reduction in pore score after 2 months.

Compared with a control after 2-3 days, there was significant barrier function recovery and increase in mature stratum corneum cells.

The result of stratified analysis was that, in the group of subjects in their 30s, we verified a tendency for suppression of the formation of peroxidized sebum.

Results

Significant reduction in melanin index after 4 weeks and 8 weeks.

After 8 weeks there was a significant reduction in the wrinkle area ratio in the site where fullerene-containing cream was applied compared to the site where the placebo cream was applied.

Significant reduction in inflammatory rashes after 4 weeks.

face and hair. Table 1 shows some of the clinical trials that have been performed using our fullerene raw materials for cosmetics. The clinical trials were performed on subjects with problems such as spots and wrinkles,3 pimples,4

pore improvement,5 roughness improvement,6 and skin which were

considered to be caused by ROS. Lotions, creams, gels, and foundations that include 2 ppm of fullerene C60

were applied and

appropriately evaluated. In all the trials, the application of the fullerene-blended cosmetic product caused an improvement compared to the condition prior to cosmetic use.

Considering the mechanism by which

fullerene acts on the skin, it is believed that sebum oxidation as well as ROS, generated by ultraviolet rays, are reduced owing to the antioxidant effect of fullerene; therefore, skin problems such as spots and conspicuous pores diminish because of the anti-inflammatory effect. Problems such as wrinkles, pimples, and

rough skin are believed to worsen because of the presence of ROS as well as impairment of the skin’s barrier and moisturising functions. An increase in carbonylated protein reportedly contributes to skin problems such as dullness and dryness, and carbonylated

protein also generates ROS, thereby promoting reactions that cause these problems. It has been experimentally verified that, when human stratum corneum, obtained by a tape strip, is irradiated with ultraviolet rays (UVA), the amount of carbonylated protein resulting from peroxylipids and protein is increased, and the addition of fullerene suppresses the increase in carbonylated protein (Fig 2). Therefore, an improvement in the moisturizing function as the result of

decreased carbonylated protein is one reason for fullerene to be effective in protecting skin from problems such as wrinkles, pimples, and roughness. So far, from the results of clinical trials using fullerene-blended cosmetics, besides the elimination of ROS and the resistance to inflammation due to its antioxidant ability, it has been shown that fullerene improves the skin’s barrier and moisturizing functions, thereby toning the entire skin. Since it is believed that continuous skin problems are related to photoaging, for sun care, an effective approach is the daily use of cosmetics that include antioxidants such as fullerene.

Fullerene raw material designed for sun care products The previous section discussed sun care with fullerene antioxidants; however, fullerene also has the ability to improve absorption of ultraviolet rays when it is combined with an ultraviolet ray absorber. This section discusses Sun Guard Fullerene A (fullerene-dispersed ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate), a fullerene raw material designed for sun care items that received an excellence award in the Effective Ingredients - Sun Care category of the 2018 Ringier Technology Innovation Awards.
