40 SUN CARE
Fullerene aids UV absorption and antioxidant protection
Masayuki Ito - Vitamin C60 BioResearch Corporation, Japan
There are two types of skin aging: photoageing and natural aging. Natural ageing is ageing by endogenous reasons; therefore, this type of aging cannot be resisted or prevented. On the other hand, photoaging is caused by exogenous ultraviolet rays (sunlight); hence, it is possible to prevent this type of aging by using appropriate sun care. It is said that 80% of skin ageing is due to photoaging. The importance of sun care has recently penetrated even into the consciousness of consumers.
Photoaging is mainly caused by ultraviolet rays. Ultraviolet rays generate reactive oxygen species (hereinafter referred to ROS) in the skin, and at the level of the epidermis, this leads to the production of melanin and inflammation, while in the dermis it leads to effects such as the destruction of collagen fiber. Without sun care, damage due to light continuously affects the skin, forming spots and deep wrinkles from which we can no longer recover even with skin care. ROS generated because of ultraviolet rays produce carbonylated protein by the oxidation of sebum (the secretion of sebaceous glands). It is said that carbonylated protein leads to the generation of more ROS due to light sensitization, resulting in rough skin and dryness, and this has recently drawn considerable research attention. Such research has also shown that sunlight (ultraviolet rays) causes not only spots and wrinkles but also general skin deterioration such as dryness and roughness. In addition, sun care is important not just for skin but also for hair, and many products are being marketed as protective measures against ultraviolet rays. There are two types of measures against photoaging: direct blocking, i.e., the blocking of ultraviolet rays by sunscreens, and suppressing of ROS, i.e., skin care products that suppress the ROS that is generated by ultraviolet rays. Our fullerene raw materials for cosmetics include various products that use both methods. This report introduces the effectiveness of fullerene in the sun care of skin and hair.

Fullerene raw materials for cosmetics
It is necessary for fullerene to be pre-mixed because it is not water-soluble and has low solubility in oils. The stability and effects of fullerene change when it is pre-mixed; therefore, one should not choose a raw material for a cosmetic product just because it contains fullerene. Rather, it is important to select the product according to the prescription or the purpose. Moreover, the safety of a pre-mixed raw material is also important. The stability and safety of our fullerene raw materials in the pre-mixed form have been sufficiently tested. Figure 1 shows our line-up of fullerene raw materials. As fullerene raw materials that suppress ROS, there are three types for use mainly in skin care products: Radical Sponge® Fullerene® Fullerene®
, LipoFullerene®
ppm of fullerene. Guard Fullerene®
, and Moist ; for makeup, there is Veil . All of these include at least 200
Also included in the line-up are Sun A, as a fullerene raw
material for sunscreen, and Hair Shiny
Fullerene® for hair care. These products include at least 100 ppm of fullerene.
Sun care by the antioxidant effect of fullerene For skin care with antioxidants, the characteristics of the antioxidant ability are important. Our fullerene raw materials for cosmetics have been experimentally verified to exhibit antioxidant ability characterized by the following three characteristics: considerable strength, long- lasting power, and stability ultraviolet rays. For example, when we measured the anti- oxidant ability of Radical Sponge with a β-carotene bleaching assay, we achieved an antioxidizing effect 172 times higher than that of vitamin C, indicating that Radical Sponge has extremely strong antioxidant ability.1
Similarly, with a β-carotene
bleaching assay of Radical Sponge under ultraviolet rays irradiation, we verified that the loss of antioxidant ability was less than that with vitamin C or vitamin E,2 demonstrating that this is a raw material stably exhibits antioxidant ability for skin that is exposed to ultraviolet rays, such as
For skin care: Protecting skin from ultraviolet rays by using antioxidants (radicalSponge/LipoFullerene/ MoistFullerene/Veil Fullerene
For hair care: Protecting hair from ultrviolet rays by using anti- oxidants (Hair Shiny Fullerene/ -MO)
As a sunscreen: Increasing ultraviolet rays absorption when used in combination with an ultraviolet rays absorber. (Sun Guard Fullerene)
