INTERVIEW 17 Those shifts in consumer

behaviour take a long time, but product format is certainly going to be a big driver of innovation. We have to keep in mind that when we ask consumers to change their behaviour, it is a much longer- term project. But I see first mover advantage in figuring out the next format for a product.

TP: How do you see the beauty industry changing over the next few years? KD: In the next three to five years, we’re going to see a lot more infiltration of AI into formulation. It can streamline product development; it can optimise a formulation. I definitely think we’re going to

see a lot more AI involved in our workflows. It will free up some of our time for deep thinking and innovation research instead of putting out fires, trying to replace the latest banned ingredient, or trying to cost-reduce the formula.

The flip side of that, though,

is you have to be careful of what information you’re sharing and who with. With AI and product development, it might be really easy to copy a formulation if using a shared AI platform. You may be unknowingly educating your competitors about your product development work. If you’re looking to innovate and

gain patents, you need to be careful about disclosing information. Using AI may be considered a disclosure of your invention.

TP: Do you see students in danger of becoming over-reliant on AI? KD: It’s important to be educated about how to use AI. But when it comes to students, there’s something about struggling through a problem and figuring out how to solve it that’s invaluable to their growth as scientists. The real challenge with AI is figuring out how to use it responsibly as a tool to streamline workflows, but to not use it as a crutch. It’s really important to understand how to solve problems and not rely on AI for a quick and easy answer. Using AI as a research tool can be

a challenge because you still need a human to assess and verify what it is providing you, and if you don’t have the knowledge to be able to do that then AI can certainly lead you astray. Knowing how to evaluate AI and

how to see when it has made an error is going to become a really valuable skill in the future.

TP: Will AI make it more difficult for graduates to find jobs because it can do more of the entry-level work? Are your students finding harder to get jobs in the beauty industry? KD: There still are entry level jobs in the cosmetics industry. You’ll still need laboratory technicians to make stability batches and things like that. That’s something that AI can’t replace as somebody has to physically put together batches of formulations. You might see some challenges

with other roles. In regulatory positions, or technical marketing. Writing, advertising, things like that. Another challenge for young

professionals today is there’s simply more students aware of, and trying to get into, the cosmetics industry. If I look back to my own generation,

In the next three to five years, we’re going to see a lot more infiltration of AI into

formulation Kelly Dobos, instructor of cosmetic science at the University of Cincinnati
