preservative line consists of an expanding series of products based on levulinic, sorbic, and benzoic acids. Some versions of the natural


preservative line contain additional components that have the important benefit of extending the maximum effective pH range. This broader pH range of the natural preservative line significantly expands the range of cosmetic and personal care products which can now be successfully protected with organic acid based preservatives.


How does it perform in real world formulations? The natural preservative line offers highly effective, broad-spectrum protection to a wide range of end-use products and, in fact, offers greater system compatibility and efficacy than many other natural preservatives. Additionally, the natural preservative line is effective at very low use levels compared with other natural preservatives and has been shown to protect some customer formulations with as little as 0.2% use level. As a result of this and other factors, the natural preservative line cost-in-use is much lower than other natural preservatives. The data in Figures 1-3 illustrates not only the strong efficacy of the natural preservative line, but also the range of system compatibility as well as effectiveness in higher pH formulations. The natural preservative line offers excellent protection of a variety of personal care applications at levels as low as 0.4%, which translates into low cost-in- use. Figure 1 illustrates how LSB1 provides excellent performance in a shampoo with a pH of 5.5, while Figures 2 & 3 show how LSB2 and LSB3 provide broad-spectrum performance in systems with a pH of up to 6.5. These higher pH examples demonstrate how the natural preservative line can provide excellent broad-spectrum protection where more traditional organic acid preservatives would fail. This is a distinct advantage of the natural preservative line, and is good news for formulators of higher pH products who previously could not consider consumer friendly organic acid preservatives.


COSMOS approval Troy has received COSMOS approval for LSB1 and is working to gain similar COSMOS approvals on other natural preservative line versions in the coming months. COSMOS approval represents an important milestone for the new line of natural preservatives, and supports Troy’s strategy of developing and offering more sustainable preservatives that fit today’s consumer trends while still delivering excellent performance and cost efficiency.
