14 SCC MEETING

everything we put in place has resulted in a successful event. Since our move to NYC we have continued to grow this show and have a global footprint in North America. Suppliers’ Day is considered to be a premier show for the ingredients and formulations industry.”

Gino then touched upon his plans for Suppliers’ Day in 2020: “I’m very excited because now as Chair of the NYSCC I get to put my vision into action and this year our theme is ‘Revolutionary Disruptors.’ It is a broad term that has evolved from multiple sources, but I think it encompasses what is disrupting the industry right now in terms of relevant topics, marketing platforms and elements driving the personal care industry together and making it successful. We see from different trend forecasting agencies that colour cosmetics is growing, skin care is growing, and mindfulness and wellness is booming, but we want to capture what is that specific topic from these forecasts that is going to be helpful for our Members. At Suppliers’ Day this May we will have an all- day cannabis workshop, an Indie 360 event at the World Trade Center in February which will expand experientially at the event on site and incorporate select suppliers accelerator programs on the show floor.” The role of the SCC and NYSCC can be instrumental in tackling major industry issues, as Gino explained: “I think the regulatory aspect for a lot of things has been controversial, with parabens and sunscreens, for example. I think the NYSCC is really bridging the gap on the technical aspects of these topics to make it clearer for raw material suppliers or brands on what is

really important to address. Not because a study comes out that says that these group of raw materials needs to be banned, but through a transparent environment where we can talk about these issues together and have input from consumer brands, raw material suppliers and our partners.”

Technology Showcase and Posters The Technology Showcase at the event combines the detailed analysis of scientific poster sessions with the direct engagement of a commercial exhibition. At the event, it was possible to see a huge range of new technology from leading global ingredient suppliers. For example, Bloomage Biotech presented on a new anti-photoageing and cell protective agent, called Bioyouth EGT, which is obtained by multi fermentation of Hericium Erinaceum & Tricholoma Matsutake. Multi fermentation can increase the yield of L-ergothioneine (EGT), which is a sulfur-containing derivative of the amino acid histidine, a unique stable antioxidant and cytoprotective agent, existing in the human body. Penreco were showcasing an anti-ageing clinical study featuring their products, Verastique and Versagel. These two products offer a delivery system that significantly improves anti-ageing efficacy of squalene on six major anti-ageing parameters. The efficacy benefits are perceivable via visual, tactile assessments and image analysis. Renmatix was introducing a novel pickering emulsifier with skin care benefits from red maple. Renmatix’s new Celltice ingredient, derived from only water, heat

and wood chips left over from sustainably harvested red maple trees, builds on the trend for upcycled products. It comes from an abundant, sustainable feedstock, is cost- effective and, as a self-emulsifying active, delivers multiple skin care and formulation benefits in one ingredient. Biocogent presented a poster on helping acne-prone skin by utilising a naturally-occurring bacteriophage, which can be produced and purified through a streamlined process. The evaluation showed that a bacteriophage can be used to target and help eradicate P. acnes biofilm on skin.

TRI Princeton were revealing new ways to quantify hair movement, pollution protection and the analysis of textured hair. Natural, healthy hair movement is an important visual cue for consumers with long hair, and now equipment and software developed by BosaNova allows the in vitro quantification of different hair movement parameters.

Conclusion The 73rd Annual Scientific Meeting and Technology Showcase demonstrated the importance coming together in order to exchange the latest information from within the industry and from associated sectors. Moments such as Timothy Caulfield’s keynote lecture serve to challenge and galvanise the industry, giving an opportunity to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

The 74th Scientific Meeting will take place at the Sheraton Times Square on December 15-16, 2020.
