changed with 55% from the healthy initial state. When the preservatives are combined with 1.5% 2kDa Inulin, the Shannon index only changed with 20% (Fig 4). Preservatives are clearly disturbing the natural microbial protection leading to the invasion of foreign species coming from the environment. With inulin the microbial protection is stronger and does not allow foreign invading microorganisms.


The damaging effect of a natural and mild surfactant/emulsifier on the protective skin microbiota Surfactants because of their dual nature, being hydrophilic and lipophilic, do kill microorganisms by disrupting their cell membrane. The surfactants need to be in contact for at least 15 seconds.14 Through DNA sequencing the skin


microbiota was mapped before applying a mild natural surfactant and after using the surfactant. The same measurements were performed with the same surfactant combined with 1% inulin. The results were presented through the Shannon index. The mild natural surfactant destroyed the skin microbiota diversity with 25%. However, combined with 1% inulin, the diversity remained unaltered. Inulin shielded the skin microbiota from the mild natural surfactant.


Conclusion The skin microbiota is vital to keep our skin and our body healthy. It protects us against unwanted microorganisms, supports hydration, maintains the skin integrity and protects indirectly against UV damage through suppressing inflammation. In other words, it keeps us beautiful. Common ingredients like preservatives and surfactants/emulsifiers have a devastating effect on the diversity and the balance of this protective skin microbiota and consequently on our skin health. Combining disturbing preservatives and surfactants with high molecular weight inulin supports our skin microbiota to stay healthy. This prebiotic inulin offers the skin a tool to continue its protective task even under difficult conditions. 2kDa Inulin is an efficient cosmetic ingredient for sensitive skin as well as for cosmetics designed to protect the skin under all conditions.
