22 PRESERVATIVES

Dow Microbial Control has signed an exclusive supply agreement for LAE with Barcelona-based Lamirsa who owns the intellectual property around manufacturing and use of LAE in personal care products. Neolone PHCG and Neolone PHBC are

broad-spectrum preservatives specifically designed for rinse-off and leave-on applications, such as face masks, creams, lotions, shampoo and wipes. Together, these innovative blends boast high-performance features for mild personal care formulations, including: optimised ratio of ingredients for cost efficiency; efficacy at a broad range of PH; low odour.

Spectrastat G2-N, from Inolex, is a blend of multifunctional ingredients that allows formulators to use hurdle technology to create self-preserving formulations. As opposed to traditional methods of preservation, hurdle technology is a formulation approach whereby combinations of ingredients and other aspects of formulation are used along with good manufacturing principles. Spectrastat G2-N acceptable for use in organic personal care products under NSF/ANSI 305-2012 and includes glyceryl caprylate, 100% natural skin conditioning agent and medium spreading emollient that also has antimicrobial properties, caprylhydroxamic acid (CHA), a chelating agent, and glycerin. By using Spectrastat G2-N in the practice

of hurdle technology, formulations that pass challenge tests can be created without the inclusion of traditional preservatives such as for example, parabens, isothiazolinones, and formaldehyde donors. These traditional preservatives are currently seen as undesirable by consumers. A special benefit of Spectrastat G2-N is that it performs superbly at neutral pH, a state where many other alternative preservation systems are ineffective.

SabiLize New is Sabinsa’s proprietary blend of natural ingredients, comprising essential oil fractions and extracts with potential antimicrobial and antioxidant activity and proven preservative efficacy for use in cosmetic and personal care formulations. The ingredient is natural, effective at significantly low levels and offers broad spectrum anti-microbial activity. In addition it has a significant anti-oxidant profile with preservative efficacy proven in cream formulations.

It is a minimal irritant for ocular irritation potential and a non-irritant for dermal irritation potential. This pale brown to brown coloured liquid with a mild, aromatic odour is soluble in oils and non- polar solvents. This product is GMO free and Kosher certified. The INCI is: INCI: Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Leaf Oil and Glyceryl Laurate Magnolia Extract, Thyme oil,

Monolaurin. schülke has developed a new,

highly effective cosmetic preservative through the optimally harmonised and patented triple combination of proven and new innovative ingredients. With euxyl

PE 9010, schülke has developed a cosmetic preservative that is highly established in

the cosmetics industry worldwide. Due to the international limitation of

phenoxyethanol up to a maximum of 1%, the wish came up to raise the effectiveness of phenoxyethanol through an even more sophisticated system to the maximum level. euxyl K 830 is the result of schülke’s competence and experience and includes the new OCX Efficacy Enhancing System in combination with phenoxyethanol. The highly effective cosmetic preservative exhibits outstanding effectiveness even in neutral pH ranges. Especially in leave-on formulations, the challenge test results of euxyl K 830 are also convincing.

The main challenge of mild, ‘free

from’ preservatives is microbial contamination. Sharon Labs is offering a new preservative solution, with

amplified efficacy. This range offers broad spectrum and superior activity, allowing a significantly lower level of use in a finished product of ~ 0.5%.

The Sharomix Amplify

preservative line, from Sharon, is based on a combination of several preservatives, to achieve the best antimicrobial results, so less preservative delivers more protection. The Sharomix Amplify

preservative line offers reduced level of use 0.5%; is free from parabens, formaldehyde donors and isothiazolinones; has high compatibility in formulas, odour and colour free. TroyCare LSB3, from Troy, is an innovative, predominantly organic acid preservative system comprised of levulinic, benzoic, and sorbic acids plus a small amount of phenylpropanol. TroyCare LSB3 is a clear, low colour liquid with very mild aroma of floral spice which, at typical use levels, can easily be masked, if so desired. Due to its patent-pending formulation, TroyCare LSB3 is able to provide excellent broad-spectrum protection against both bacteria and fungi. TroyCare LSB3 can preserve a wide range of formulation types, but its unique combination of ingredients allows it to maintain efficacy at higher pH levels where other organic acid systems

fail. PC
