Lets quickly discuss how to change the way it is done for gaming businesses.


1. Stop restricting scope by IP or application. Test the entire business over a period of time.


2. Testing can be passive, where no attack traffic is ever sent to a target. Ask your testing firm to perform a passive assessment of three of your primary competitors and your business so you can compare. It is the same as performing SEO analysis of your site versus your competitors and can give some real insight.


3. You pay for what you get. Don’t buy on price, rather ask the testing firm what they are doing, and how they are doing it. Are they CREST regulated? What level of insurance do they provide? You can buy testing for £300 a day to over £1500 a day. Drill the supplier and really understand the differences.


4. You pay for what you get. Don’t accept a testing firm that will test and give you a report. Tell the firm what you want in the way of output. As an example, here are my three favourite ever client requests in order of greatness:


a. Please produce a 5-minute video of the attack, in the style of the hackers movie;


b. We would like our senior developer to take part. (We had her work with our team leader on the engagement and performed a number of the attacks)


c. We would like all of the information in a sortable excel file, and the final report should be delivered as a kindle compatible book.


Is sufficient emphasis placed on educating employees to interact with company's IT systems and encourage good practice?


Simply no. IT training has its place but is not going to help in the fight against insecurity. Awareness training can no longer be a sit-down and watch video training either. It must be interactive.
