No more casino licences to be allowed in Mexico according to the latest statement from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador

Puerto Rico - Governor says casinos can reopen Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vázquez has confirmed that casinos in the country can now reopen at a capacity of 25 per cent. Casinos have pleaded with the Government to let them reopen for months with each property investing $100,000 to establish the protocols.

Ismael Vega, General Manager of Casino Metro, said: “They listened to our complaints and we are grateful . Our employees need to work and have been struggling with unemployment insurance. We want to contribute to the economy and we are committed to continuing to do it well . Our doors are open for those who have doubts about the security of the casinos."

She said that casinos had lost $23m in monthly revenue, while each facility is spending an average of $200,000 a month each in operational costs to cover power, water, and cleaning, to maintain the shuttered properties. Governor Vázquez warned: “We cannot lower our guard. There’s an invisible enemy in our environment, and we have to learn to deal with him.”

A total of 15 casino owners and operators had come together to say that another 80,000 tourism industry jobs have also been affected by the closing.

“The outlook is even bleaker given the reality that many of those people who had to be laid off in March and again in July, have not yet received their unemployment benefits, lacking income to support their families,” the group said in a joint statement.

Uruguay Casino tender opens for Rocha coast resort

Te President of Uruguay Luis Lacalle Pou and the Minister of Tourism, Germán Cardoso have helped launch a tender for a five- star hotel with a casino located between the towns of La Paloma and Chu on the Rocha coast, known as the 'South American Riviera.'

Minister Cardoso said: "Tis is a long-awaited and highly anticipated project for the Rocha coast, one of the most beautiful places that the coast of Uruguay has, for many years. Rocha is a jewel that the country has in terms of biodiversity, nature, and resources. We have made every effort and zeal to give it this necessary boost for development, but with sufficient and balanced care for the environment and natural resources. We have prepared a list of conditions for the international call to present expressions of interest for the concession and operation of a

private hotel and casino on the oceanic coast of Rocha. Next Wednesday, September 23, through the websites of both the Ministry of Tourism and the Presidency of the Republic, we will be officially publishing the call, with a period of 60 days for the presentation of initiatives."

Te mayor of Rocha, Flavia Coelho added: “In April we announced that we were going to form a work team, at the level of the Ministry of Tourism, to put professionals to work in the preparation and in the preparation of a specification for the call of interest to international expression, to specify a much- desired work in the department of Rocha , as is that dream of so many years with the execution of a five- star hotel with a casino, which will give the definitive impulse and development to one of the most magnificent and wonderful places that the Uruguayan coast has."

Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has called for an investigation into whether casino licences awarded in the country have been issued unlawfully. Te President said there were question marks over some of the licences issued under President Vicente Fox’s administration saying the processes to award them were ‘inadequate.’

Presidente López said: “We are going to ‘clean up’ the government. We have a problem and we are going to solve it because we are coherent and persistent. We want no more casinos to open and no more permits to be granted. Some that began during Vicente Fox’s administration were not adequate. We are not going to grant such permits. Some licenses may have been issued but that is because we need to clean up the government, and we have been doing that for a long time now, but we are not done yet.”

“It is sometimes noted that for each authorised

casino about seven million pesos are obtained,” he added. “We would have to look into that. Te Secretary of the Interior has to conduct an investigation and if these licenses have been wrongfully granted, they should be revoked.”

Te Ministry of the Interior (SEGOB) has questioned how Attractions and Emotions Vallarta, was allowed to assign 50 licences to four companies; Latam Operations, Waddcor, True Win Group and Grupo Blue Bet México. Tey have been asked to prove that they comply with the legal requirements and individually provide all the documentation marked in articles 21 and 22 of the Regulation of the Federal Law of Games and Draws.

SEGOB also made it clear that during the present administration, many licences have been refused, some establishments have been closed and others have been denied the chance to offer sports betting.
