Some jurisdictions
like Ethiopia are also cracking down on illegal operators. Earlier this year,
Ethiopia’s National Lottery
Administration closed as many as
4,000 illegal sports betting
establishments in
Addis Ababa alone. In Malawi there is only one licensed land- based operator while the government has recently opened the online sports betting market to a limited number of just eight operators.
RESTRICTED MARKETS
Monopolies still hold sway in some jurisdictions. Tis is the case for the Ivory Coast where Loterie
Nationale de Côte d’Ivoire (LONACI) has been online since 2012. Sports betting is available online via its Sportcash platform and unlicensed operators are prohibited. Te exclusive right to operate sports betting is also granted to the national lottery of Burkina Faso (LONAB).
Other markets are restricted meaning that there is little or no room for investment.
In South Africa, sports betting is only permitted via locally licensed bookmakers while in Ethiopia only local gambling companies are allowed to operate in the market.

RELIGION
Religion of course also plays a crucial part in sports betting regulation. An estimated 50 per cent of the continent's population identifying as Muslim. Islam is the

Gambling is banned or at least severely restricted in many jurisdictions in North Africa due to religious reasons. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that gambling is banned completely and many countries with a high Muslim population have a large grey market.
In Algeria where 99 per cent of the population of 43 million people are Sunni Muslim, gambling is permitted via state monopoly holder Pari Sportif Algérien (PSA) which runs traditional lottery games and a very limited number of sports betting games. In Egypt,
