Page 73 Mentor’s Valor Enables Industry 4.0

Wilsonville, OR —Mentor’s Valor IoT manufacturing hardware is designed to create a dedicated IoT infrastruc- ture for the entire packaging assem- bly line, providing accelerated inter- faces for machines that do not output Open Manufacturing Language (OML). This enables Industry 4.0 deployment without the need to replace existing equipment. Valor IoT software provides

machine and line performance reporting, progress data, and infor- mation related to material consump- tion and traceability. Information is shown in a comprehensive dash- board, and utilized by several key

Applied Motion Products Integrates HEIDENHAIN Encoder

Schaumburg, IL — HEIDENHAIN Corporation has partnered with Applied Motion Products in the development of Applied Motion’s StepSERVO™ integrated motors. Using HEIDENHAIN’s RENCO brand RCML 15 rotary encoders, StepSERVO combines the high- torque capabilities of step motors

computerized applications. The Valor Finite Production Planning software creates and adjusts product work order flows based on dynamic cus- tomer delivery demand patterns. OML data is read from the line

for live production status. Digital process flow modeling and optimiza- tion is possible for all production sce- narios, addressing such constraints as materials, tools and resources. With specific knowledge of all different SMT and related machines, the Valor Production Plan product creates a reliable, high-yield production process regardless of the product mix, without excess inventory buildup. This also reduces SMT changeover times through the dynamic grouping of feed-

ers between products. Valor’s Lean Material Manage -

ment product provides an automated supply chain including a complete logistics engine for a lean materials flow with just-in-time materials delivery. This is based on actual machine consumption and calculated consumption, as identified by the immediate production plan commit- ment. All materials logistics through handheld operator terminals are managed for material inventory accuracy, including complete materi- al consumption and spoilage. Data is then shared with the ERP system, reducing needless material stock and bloated warehouse inventory. Information is normalized and

exchanged in the OML format between the machines and processes throughout and across different lines, into factory-wide computeriza- tions and to the enterprise systems. The OML language and single IoT communication infrastructure is bi- directional, providing SMT machine vendors with accurate material infor- mation and work order detail from site level.

with the closed-loop dynamic control of servo systems. The result is a motor-and-drive

solution that operates efficiently and quietly, while providing greater torque and higher acceleration rates than conventional step motor sys- tems. To develop the solution for use by machine builders, Applied Motion started with a proven integrated motor design, added closed-loop servo firmware and RENCO’s high- resolution incremental encoder to create StepSERVO. The RCML 15 incremental

rotary encoder has a particularly low profile with a height of only 8.9 mm (0.35 in.) and still offers the perform- ance of today’s rotary encoders. The rotary encoder is excellent for applica- tions with limited space for installa- tion. Features include a resolution of 5,000 signals per revolution, commu- tation signals U, V and W, and an operating temperature range of –30 to +100°C (–22 to +212°F). It is also equipped with a patented slide lock mechanism for simple, self-centering

mounting. Contact: HEIDENHAIN Corp.,
