Stand-Alone equipment does not connect to anymonitoring or call centres so there are usually no ongoing charges
for its use. It requires very little, if any, wiring and is usually simply plugged in or takes batteries. Stand-Alone equipment is often ideal for individuals who have a live-in carer or a carerwho lives nearby as the equipment can sound an alert or trigger a pager to alert the carer that attention is required.
Who Can Benefit From Stand-Alone Telecare?
Research has shown that Stand-Alone Telecare can benefit people with a range of disabilities to live more independently and safely in their own homes. It is particularly helpful in supporting people with sensory impairments, dementia, head injuries, those who are prone to falls and people with learning difficulties. It can help people to stay in their own home for longer – putting off moving into a residential home or preventing a hospital admission. On page 316 are a small range of case studies which aim to highlight how Stand-Alone Telecare has been used successfully with a variety of people. This technology can also be invaluable for carers too, for example, by reassuring them that a loved one can get help in an emergency if needed, alerting them if a person is wandering or by reminding them to take their tablets regularly in order to avoid hospital admissions.
