Day in the life A grand day out

Jon Bagby covers the York area with his Out There franchise. Here, he describes a typical day…

the conversation we have, I put together a tailor-made proposal that suits their business and customer demographic, and arrange a follow-up meeting for the next week.

10.30am-2.00pm It’s time to head into York city centre for a couple of appointments. The sun is still shining, so I take a couple of photos of the river in sunlight and put a post out on Twitter to let my followers know my whereabouts. This helps promotes York, and the businesses I work with will get involved as well. I’ll then have a latte from my favourite coff ee van. I’ll have a quick wander around the

streets again to identify more businesses to contact and then head off to my meetings – a restaurant and a shop this time. The restaurant is a service meeting, so I’ll take all the statistics from their last campaign, run through them and then discuss the next promotion.

2.00pm-3.00pm The calls you make are really varied; the products we off er can suit pretty much all businesses. On the way home, I have arranged a meeting with a golf club secretary. I try and make four or fi ve appointments when I’m out and about to get the most out of the day.

A conversation ensues about how poor O

destinations around the world. With Out There, he promotes local businesses in the leisure and lifestyle industry.

7.00am-8.00am Having a toddler, the early mornings aren’t too much of a problem. I have been making appointments over the last few days, so I’ll have a quick check of my emails to make sure nothing needs answering before I head out for the day. I’ll double-check my route and the appointments I have booked in. York is

my destination for the day, which will be delightful as the sun is shining.

8.00am-10.00am I set out around 8.00am. On the way to York, I have an appointment at a country hotel. The appointment isn’t until 9.30am, but I like to get there early, see the nearby villages and make notes of any potential businesses I can contact before the week ends.

The appointments normally last around one hour; we have a good chat about the hotel and what services they provide, as well as their customer base and where most of their customers come from. I let them know all about Out There, what we do and how we can help. Based on

my golfi ng skills are. It’s a great way to identify with a golf club and talk about what they off er; new memberships, lessons, golf starter days – these are all things we can help with in promoting them and their services.

4.00pm-6.00pm

I’ll get home some time after 4.00pm. I’ll make some calls to my customers and arrange appointments for the next few days. More importantly, I’ll spend time on the paperwork keeping everything up to date. I’ll update the management system on my meetings today, update my calendar and then plan tomorrow so I’m all set in the morning to get going again.
