Taking care of business
Richard and Emily Magrath explain how a Caremark franchise allowed them to realise their dream of helping the community

in early 2013, the Magraths’ home- care business has gone from strength to strength. Today, they are providing a valuable service to some 225 vulnerable people in their community, enabling them to remain living safely and independently at home. Their success is the result of a lot of hard work and strategic planning, plus following the Caremark model, all of which has seen them collect several awards along the way. Richard added: “We did a lot of research

ichard and Emily Magrath changed the course of their lives when they took the plunge and set up in business together, looking for an
enterprise that would bring fi nancial and personal rewards.
When they started looking into franchising, they quickly realised that the care sector was where they should focus. “Given our personal values and involvement in the community, we decided that a care business was something that fi tted and ticked many boxes for the type of business we wanted to have,” said Richard. Their previous career paths also made social care a good choice. Emily had worked for a leading cancer charity and had solid management experience, while Richard came from a commercial background, having developed businesses across a range of different sectors. Their research led them to Caremark,
where they had several in-depth meetings at the head offi ce to see if there was mutual interest, and if it was a good fi t for both candidate and franchisor. Emily and Richard decided to sign with Caremark and

bought the Northern Ireland territory, which covers Ards, North Down and Belfast. An important point to consider when looking into the care sector is that one needs to have a genuine passion and interest in the industry. The daily business involves working with vulnerable individuals – it is not about widgets on a factory line. Kevin Lewis, CEO of Caremark, explained: “When it comes down to it, we do not sell franchises like some franchisors do, but we proactively seek the right calibre of people to join our ever-growing and increasingly successful network. It is important to have a real passion for the industry fi rst of all, rather than simply a desire to build a business and make money.”

and groundwork prior to opening our business – for example, meeting with our local trusts and stakeholders. Soon after registration we signed a contract with our local trust as we had already had meetings with them and had everything in place. Also, it was important from a business perspective to hit breakeven point as early in the business as we could, which we managed to do at a very early stage.” However, it’s not all hard work and no
play. Richard and Emily combine their active business life with bringing up their three young boys, making sure they enjoy family time together, which they were both keen to maintain from the outset. Emily said: “Time is very precious to both of us. We are both very heavily involved in our local church and spending time with our boys is also very precious, whether that be weekends away or simply going for walks in the evening.” All in all, Richard and Emily are delighted with the way their business is growing and the service they provide to their local community. To them it is much more than simply a business; it is the realisation of personal dreams and the pleasure of being able to give something back to society.
