GUIDE TO THE MAIN OPERATORS

SECTION 1: THE UK RAIL NETWORK The Railways Act 2005 introduced a new structure to the UK rail industry, designed to deliver reduced bureaucracy, a single line of accountability for performance, and clear government control of strategy and public expenditure at a national level. Under the new structure, the Strategic Rail Authority was abolished, with the Department for Transport taking on the role of managing and letting franchises.
