plays where mechanical machines are used in order to create the scenery, and props are liberally placed. However, by taking these away and utilizing props that playwrights would have used several centuries ago, the musical seems more personal with the audience. These sorts of props may seem outdated to some, but it will appear natural and sometimes even adorable to most as the show goes on. This new approach to stage acting is enjoyable to those who keep an open mind.


The humor in this musical is admittedly not completely appropriate for those under thirteen years old, who may have not yet gained knowledge of the references of an average American middle school student. However, much of the humor comes from the laughter of audiences when witness- ing the completely random and normally inappropriate social activities in which the characters engage. The opening scene for Act 2 involves the entire cast dressed in mermaid costumes (there is only one woman in the cast), complete with padded bras, grass skirts, shiny fans and etc. The scene is completely ridiculous and out of the blue. This is the kind of humor in which Peter and the Starcatcher engages and excels. All in all, the Peter Pan that we know, the stereotypically boastful and excit- ing young boy is taken away in an instant and is given a dark background in this prequel to the original story. The eternally young boy is revealed to be originally a miserable orphan living a hard-knock life who becomes transformed into the cheery boy that we all know by accidentally bathing in a magical element called “Starstuff”. By adding a new perspective to Peter Pan in an entertaining and hilarious way, this musical is one of the best, if not the best, that I have seen.

Rick Elice 극본의 이뮤지컬은 작은 무대를 적절히 이용하고, 의도적으로 현대적 무대 장치를 사용하지 않고, 특이한 이야기 방 식을 이용하며, 인간미 넘치는 유머를 최대한 이용한 작품입니다. 어떤 사람들은 이 작품에 노래가 많이 없다고 평가할지도 모릅니다. 실제로 두시간 동안 평균적인 뮤지컬에 들어가는 노래보다 훨씬 적은 수의 노래가 포함되어 있습니다. 이 작품은 최고의 음악 무대를 보여 주는 뮤지컬만 고집하시는 분들을 위한 작품은 아닙니다. 음악성도 이 작품의 강점은 아닙니다. 이 작품의 강점은 바로 즉흥적인 아이디 어와 독특함에 있습니다. 현대적 무대 장치를 거의 쓰지 않은것도 이 작품의 흥미거리입니다. 나레이션도 무대위의 배우들이 하고, 거의 모든 무대 배경도 사람이 직접 만든것을 쓰고 있습니다. 거의 모든 무대 소품들도 사람에 의 해 조작됩니다. 이런 특징들이 기계로 조작되는 다른 뮤지컬 무대와 는 달리 이 뮤지컬을 인간미 넘치는 작품을 만드는데 기여하고 있습 니다. 정말 수백년동안 써온듯한 소품들만 썼지만, 이 작품은 관객들에게 더욱 친근한 작품인듯 합니다. 어떤 소품들은 조금 촌스럽긴 하지 만, 그래도 자연스럽고 멋스럽게 느껴집니다. 이런 새로운 무대와 연기가 오픈 마인드를 가지신 관객에게는 또 하나의 즐거움이 될것 입니다.

이 뮤지컬에 나오는 어떤 유머들은 어린이들에게는 조금 부적절할지 도 모릅니다. 미국 학교에 다니는 중학생 수준의 지식이 없으면 이해 하기 힘들수도 있습니다. 하지만 대부분의 웃음 코드들은 무대위에 서 엉뚱하고 뜻밖의 행동들을 보면서 폭소가 터지는 것입니다. 2장이 시작할때 모든 배우들이 인어 공주 복장을 하고 나옵니다. (배우들중 여자는 단 한명이지요) 그들이 브래지어 밑에 병을 받쳐 넣고투명한 치마를 입고, 반짝이는 날개를 달고 나오는 이 장면은 정말 상상하지 못할 만큼 웃깁니다. 이런 것들이 Peter and the Starcatcher 이 보여주는 웃음이고, 이 작품을 훌륭하게 만드는 장점입니다. 결론적으로 이 작품에서는 우리가 원작에서 알고 있던 허풍있고 재미 있는 어린 피터팬은 보이지 않고 어두운 면을 보여주고 있습니다. 우 리가 영원히 어린이로 알고 있던 피터팬은 이 작품에서는 사회악으로 여겨지는 불쌍한 고아로 살아가다가 나중에 starstuff라는 마술의 힘으로 즐거운 소년으로 바뀌는 모습으로 나옵니다. 새로운 시각에 서 피터팬을 보는것도 아주 즐겁고 유쾌한 일입니다. 이 뮤지컬은 제 가 본 작품들중 최고들 중의 하나라고 말할수 있습니다.


Andrea’s Point of view


It all starts out like this, approximately a dozen men and a girl, Molly summarizes the first part of the show, all grouped up. They suddenly start singing, dancing, and running all over the stage. The music perfectly describes the feeling of what it is like on deck: manly, tough, hardy, and just very pirate like. Basically, Molly and her father are split onto two different ships, the Neverland and the Wasp. Molly begs her father to go on the ship with him to be part of the mission her father is on. Her father doesn’t allow it under any circumstance. He gives her a necklace and tells if that if there is any trouble.


Meanwhile, the captain of the Neverland switches luggage with the Wasp. Originally, the luggage in the Wasp held treasures of Queen Victoria. The luggage in the Neverland held simply, sand. The captain and his crew of the Neverland secretly knew this all along, and eventually got what they wanted. The other ship though, the Wasp, does not know of this. The cap- tain and crew of the Wasp aren’t worrying about anything because they all think everything’s covered. Now that they’re all in sea, no one notices a single thing. Molly goes on the Neverland, known as the really slow, wimpy ship. Her father goes on the Wasp, known as the really fast, strong ship. Molly is later introduced to three orphaned boys and soon falls in love with one of them. Their names are Prentice, Teddy, and no name. No name has a sad life. He’s only experienced total abuse and discrimination since the day he was left at the orphanage. Molly talks them into a plan that she schemed. Prentice on the other hand, says that only boys are leaders. Molly shows him and the other two that girls can be more superior at times by careful use of words. She says that she’ll take them to food if they all listened to her and followed her a leader. Once they ate, and on the way back, they find a
