Christmas Fayre 2009
In a secret location in Harborne, the Aga was on meltdown as Mrs Shackleton and Mrs Bloomer stirred and mixed and weighed and whisked their way into what surely could qualify for the Guiness Book of Records’ entry for the number of Christmas cakes one could make in a morning to sell at the annual Christmas Fayre.
The tables festooned in ivy and red ribbon, and the sparkly lights on the Christmas tree contrived to make even the Upper School hall look festive. Stalls ladened with miniature Christmas cakes, tree decorations made by the children in Art club, sparkly bags of reindeer food, stocking filler toys, baskets packed with beautiful imaginative gifts donated by the parents, cup cakes, candy, and our very own Hallfield chilli jam, Christmas gifts for faces and hands and beautiful pashminas to ward off the cold winds of December, were overseen by a jolly Father Christmas who, whilst listening to the hopes and wishes of the children, handed out some pre-festive presents.
The Pre-Prep hall was a riot of noise chatter and laughter as children tried their luck at pinning the buckle on Santa, bowling over the snowmen skittles and landing a hoop on Rudolf’s antlers. The School Council organised a ‘Guess which chimney Santa is stuck in’ game, the proceeds of which they gave to their chosen charity (one which Tigger, the Headmaster’s dog, is very pleased about) Dogs for the Disabled.
The tantalising smell of cheesy potato skins, samosas and spring rolls filled the air and of course mulled wine and mince pies, without which, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas. Probably lots of the little ones were not very hungry at tea time having dunked several marshmallows (Miss Cochrane had to go out and get further supplies) in the chocolate fountains and munched their way through mountains of popcorn laced with butterscotch. Well, it is only once a year !
The first prize of 4 raffle tickets to the pantomime ‘Sleeping Beauty’ at the Hippodrome were won by a lady called Suzy and the hamper, donated by East End foods was won by Di Dickinson. The third prize of a family photo session was won by Mrs R Blake.
The Parents’ Association Committee would like to thank all the parents who came and supported us, all those that donated the beautiful baskets, and everyone who helped - staff, friends and parents. A total of two thousand pound was raised - a magnificent effort!
