Hallfield Pupils Gain International Recognition

Starting last October, three of our pupils, Matthew Fergusson, Aloysius Lip and Ashwin Kalyana started their attempt to gain a place in the England Junior International Chess Squad.

This involved them attending six weekend tournaments spread around the country attempting to qualify for the final trials. Both Matthew and Aloysius qualified, Matthew earning a place on the squad. This is a very significant achievement since he will now be eligible to be selected for England Junior teams at every age group up to U 18.

He started his international career on July 3rd with a win and a draw in an U11 match against Holland.

Matthew and Aloysius both represented an England Under 10 team against Wales recently, both winning their matches. Everyone is confident they will gain places in the full Junior International Squad next year!

IAPS National Champions

The Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) run an annual championship each year around Easter time held at Aldro School near Godalming in Surrey. Most Prep schools outside London have children up to Year 8 and so this is a tough competition for our pupils.

This year we sent a team for the third time and after a very tight contest we finished 1st equal with Nottingham High School in both the U11 section and in the overall event.

Aloysius Lip finished joint runner-up for the overall individual title and joint U11 champion with Daniel Muir. He did very well as he was only the 10th highest rated in the competition. 5.5/7 Aloysius Lip 4.5/7 Matthew Fergusson 4.5/7 Ashwyn Kalyana 4/7 Hari Nijjar 4/7

National Chess Grading Database Our most experienced players have a grading, a number that represents their standard of play.

It serves as a reasonable pointer to the likely result of games between players. It is fairly rare for primary school children outside London to have gradings but Hallfield now have five with more likely to be given when the new list appears in August. 110 Aloysius Lip 109 Ashwyn Kalyara 97

Hari Nijar

95 Matthew Fergusson 29

Aroun Kalyana

Malcolm Hunt, the chess coach, has a grade of 183 and so remains well ahead of the team at present! But for how long! They may be snapping at his heels when they reach Year 6
