A New Career for Hallfield School’s Chairman of Governors 5
Two members of the Year 6 cohort who left school in July joined the Reverend Dr Nick Fisher for a brief photo opportunity at the AGM of the School’s Governors and Trustees on Thursday 14th January as he retired as Chairman of Governors after a 56 year connection with the School.
Dr Fisher lived at the School with his two brothers and parents, both of whom taught there. His father, Allan, taught Classics from 1938-79 and his mother, Aileen, taught Art from 1938-87 teaching all three of her sons, and even her grandson Francis. Dr Fisher continued his education at Moseley Grammar School before gaining English degrees at Newcastle upon Tyne and Leeds. He had a brief period on the teaching staff at the School before taking up a career in the police that spanned 32 years, reaching the rank of Chief Superintendent.
Although his career has taken him away from Birmingham his connections with the School have never wavered. He became a Hallfield parent from 1983-90 when his son Francis, following in his father’s and uncles’ footsteps attended Hallfield; a Trustee in 1990; a Governor in 1991 for eight years and latterly Chairman of Governors from 1999 – 2010.
Amazing though it seems, Dr. Fisher has managed to find time between managing Hallfield and the criminal fraternity, to pursue his love of music by singing in the Birmingham Bach Choir. His love of English literature and his passion for the work of the poet John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester, led him to use some of the latter’s work as a libretto for a chamber opera by the Dutch composer Hans Kox. A book on the Earl of Rochester by Dr Fisher is due to be published in March of this year.
In November 2009, Dr Fisher was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Gloucester and has left Birmingham to live and work in Northleach in the Cotswolds. He leaves the post of Chairman and becomes President of Hallfield School, a new position created for him as an acknowledgement of the years of service he, and his family, have given to Hallfield School.
