Amrit Shoker
Text Messaging 17 Amrit Shoker was one of 70 children to be notified of their secondary school choice by text message. He found out that he had won a place at King Edward VI School Five Ways, his first choice. This followed the UK’s first trialling of a text messaging service for schools admissions.
Things we do Coughs and Sneezes Spread Diseases!
It was that time of the year again when the collective germs started to kick in and everyone at Hallfield was complaining of sore throats and blocked noses. In those worrying times of daily reports of new cases of Swine Flu we are all very conscious of the maxim ‘Catch it; bin it; kill it.’
On September 18th ITV cameras came into school to film Year 1 participating in a lesson with our School Nurse Mrs Amandeep Bhandal. The lesson was part of the Sneeze Safe programme that has been written by education experts as part of the PSHE curriculum targets for developing a healthy lifestyle.
Mrs Bhandal demonstrated to the children how easily germs are spread by sneezing into a handful of glitter and then shaking hands with some of the pupils who went on to shake hands – and pass on the ‘glitter’ germs – to their friends. It was a very visual way of showing the children how important it is to use a tissue when we sneeze and cough. The children drew pictures of scary germs and received a certificate saying they had participated in the programme as well as some Kleenex tissues to take home to begin the good work!
Catching germs is only one of the aspects of the ‘Be Safe’ programme and Mrs Bhandal is helping our young pupils to make healthy choices at lunchtimes. She has some colourful T-shirts to hand out as prizes for competitions she intends running throughout the term.
