Memo from Andrew Finlay


I am now back in the UK and have found work with The Crown Estate’s marine team. It is great to be employed again but it is hard to conform to the normality of routine office life after the incredible adventure I had.


The bike ride was incredible – 8 months of cycling covering 13,000km from northern Alaska to the Panama Canal. The hardest part during the ride was trying to document it on camera with no support. It meant that I cycled back and forth past a tripod and camera many times to get the shot and always had the need to film in the back of my mind. Next time I do something like this I will enjoy it without viewing the scene from behind a camera lens!


Running out of food in Alaska and water in Mexico was also not ideal – the most amazing part was the hospitality and generosity of random strangers everywhere we went and the freedom of the road.


I am hoping the reward for all the filming will be visible through a documentary – the first episode was shown on Dutch TV and scheduled to run for 13 weeks. There are plans to try to arrange screening on ITV or Channel 5 in this country.
