British Under 10 Champion 7
Year 6 Ashwin Kalyana has recently finished second in a separate adult event in Nottingham, winning a prize of £80.00.
After playing chess for two and a half years, he is also the British U10 Chess Champion and has entered the U11 and the U10 Chess Championship in Canterbury. He scored 4 out of 7 in the U11 and won the U10, resulting in a £250 win and, of course, the trophy!
Treading The Boards
An Evening of the Arts 3 Music, dance and art came together on a very hot June evening, showcasing what Hallfield pupils have achieved in their creative activities.
The evening began with the orchestra playing the lovely, albeit a little unseasonal, Autumn from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi and then the pacey Gallop from the William Tell Overture by Rossini.
The Recorder Ensemble played Airborn Train and joined up with the Guitar ensemble to play Les Bouffons. The guitar ensemble went on to treat us to a medley from The Pirates of the Caribbean and a traditional American number, Streets of Laredo.
The String orchestra played a Minuet by Boccherini and a Czech Song and Dance with a tricky change of tempo in the middle that they managed superbly!
The Brass Ensemble played The Lion Sleeps Tonight, German Dance and This Old Man. What very long arms you need to play a trombone!
Then it was the turn of the saxophones and clarinets that set the feet tapping with Egyptian Dance and Rock Around the Clock.
The Chamber Choir sang beautifully – one of their numbers, Lady in White, having been written by Lin Marsh who came to judge our Inter House Music competition last year.
The air conditioning and chilled wine in the Art Room cooled every one down as they admired the huge variety of work in- cluding prints, drawings, paintings and 3 Dimensional work that has already been on display at the SATIPS art exhibition at Hordle Walhampton earlier in the term.
The evening was rounded off delightfully by the Ballet group who performed their plies, pirouettes and pas de deux with great elegance!
