String Day at Stowe 5

11 string players from String Orchestra travelled to Stowe School in Buckinghamshire on a bright autumnal morning for a Prep Schools’ String Day.

The Prep Schools worked on two pieces of Vivaldi from The Four Seasons. We were very privileged to be tutored by Mark Messenger, the Head of Strings from the Royal College of Music in London and Daniel Bhattacharaya who has previously been a member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. We were encouraged to listen carefully to the overall sound we were creating, including different sections of the orchestra where they had a lead role in the work, being aware of dynamic changes from the outset and the ever important skill of ‘watch the conductor’!

We then joined forces with Lancing College and Stowe School, working on Vaughan Williams’ Concerto Grosso. This was an amazing opportunity to hear and work alongside performers of a high level but a few years older than our own pupils. The standard was consistently high and certainly something to aspire to in the future.

The day was rounded off with a concert in the Chapel, standing in the impressive grounds of the School. Mark Messenger played alongside a music scholar from Stowe as the soloists in the 4th movement of Vivaldi’s Double Violin Concerto. Lancing College performed 3 movements of Handel and finally we joined together to perform Autumn and Spring concluding with the unmistakably English sound of Vaughan Williams.

Success for Young Musicians at Hallfield 1

Two young pupils at Hallfield have achieved outstanding success in their musical careers at the young age of 9 and 10.

Aloysius Lip, age 9, has been awarded a Grade 7 Piano, which he passed with Distinction, from the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music as well as a Grade7 Violin also passed with Distinction.

Marianne Fitzgibbon, age 10, has been selected for the National Youth Choir. Marianne, who loves singing, has been having lessons with Mrs Robinson at Hallfield and has sung in the School’s Chamber Choir.

As a member of the National Choir she will attend two residential courses a year that include performances, the next one being at Durham University in 2011.
