Case study Georgia Thompson Student at the Edge Hotel School Attracted by the combination of theoretical study and hands-on learning, Georgia started at the Edge Hotel School in May 2013. Moving away from home for the first time

was daunting, but the support she received from the team at the school meant her worries disappeared as soon as she set foot inside.

The course is intensive: it’s a BA (Hons) hotel management degree

delivered in just two years, which makes the experience unlike any other traditional BA course. Georgia was initially intimidated by the idea of the fast-track degree,

fearing she wouldn’t be able to keep up with the pace of learning. However, with the constant support of her peers, mentors and the hotel staff, she quickly discovered she thrived under the pressure and the sense of achievement that came with every new skill learnt or shift completed provided the motivation to keep her striving to progress. Georgia was recently awarded the prestigious Laurent-Perrier bursary

after impressing Laurent-Perrier UK’s national account manager, Brigitte Hennessy, with her passion for a career in the industry. Her award will take her to Laurent-Perrier’s vineyards in Champagne at harvest time for an in-depth introduction to this fascinating world. This is even more special to Georgia as she has always wanted to

work in France and is very keen to begin her career there once she graduates from the Edge Hotel School.

What education opportunities does the Eden Project offer? In September 2014 we launched apprenticeships in three key areas – Eden Host, Eden Chef and Eden Gardener – and in autumn 2015 we will start running foundation degree courses in horticulture, event management and performing arts.

Why has the Eden Project decided to launch this programme? As an educational charity, our ethos includes leaving the world a better place than we found it. Helping to develop work and study programmes that go beyond the standard frameworks enables us to support young people in developing appropriate work experience that equips them for a sustainable future.

Who is Eden working with to deliver and develop the programme? Cornwall College Group.

Why should students choose to study at the Eden Project? Eden is well renowned for its huge variety of gardens and horticulture. We have supported horticulture students for many years, both with apprenticeships and higher education placements. As a visitor attraction, we also have
