Travel Innovation
The new Travel Tech Zone at WTM Latin America highlights the increasing importance of technology to the industry
This year, WTM Latin America has introduced a dedicated Travel Tech Zone to
the exhibition floor for the first time. The dedicated zone includes some of the
biggest names in the travel technology industry, including Google and Tripadvisor. WTM Latin America exhibition director
Lawrence Reinisch said: “The growth of travel technology over recent years has been phenomenal.
“I am delighted to be able to launch a new
travel technology region to the exhibition floor. Travel technology is an increasingly important section of the industry and it is right that WTM Latin America gives it the dedicated focus it deserves.”
The new Travel Tech Zone at WTM Latin America comes amid new innovations that are transforming the travel technology world. Facebook, for example, is now in every stage of
the travel process, from dreaming and planning to experiencing and reflecting, while the growing number of travel blogs – written by professional travel writers, amateurs or travel companies themselves – give a colourful, first-person view of a particular destination or experience. The Travel Tech Zone has also got an
Innovation Zone, where companies will be giving brief introductions to new products and platforms, explaining how they work in an easy and accessible manner to delegates. WTM Latin America project manager David Benitez said: “The Innovation Zone is a laboratory of ideas and an interactive showroom where people learn, discover and experience the latest innovations in travel technology.” Futhermore, anyone who visits the Travel Tech Zone will also be interested in the comprehensive technology issues covered in WTM Latin America’s conference and seminar programme.
Technology on the move Mobile, meanwhile, is a key growth area. Everyone’s going mobile and smartphones and tablets will be the key customer service tool in travel within the next five years, according to WTM research.
The WTM Global Trends Report 2013 suggests
that, by its nature, travel is a mobile activity – so the travel trade is using mobile devices before, during and after trips to communicate with customers. Although communications on-the-go offer
great opportunities, travel firms must also be aware that they increase customer expectations, states the report, produced in association with Euromonitor International. Travellers now expect real-time answers and
greater customisation, wherever they are and at any time, before, during and after a trip. Caroline Bremner, Euromonitor International head of travel and tourism research, said: “By 2017, the mobile channel is expected to account for more thann 30% of online travel value
sales. All the signs indicate that mobile will be at the core of customer relationships in travel.”
Innovation Zone Gaming company Mooveteam will showcase its software on Google Glass as part of the event’s new Innovation Zone.
WTM Latin America participants will be able
to experience first-hand the new MooveTeam TeamBuilding app. Visitors will have the chance to read messages,
get directions, take videos and pictures and send and share information with other team members all through individual wearable computer glasses. MooveTeam will be presenting the integration of Google Glass with the latest version of its gaming platform, as well as iBeacons and other indoor geolocation apps in daily 20 minute sessions on the exhibition floor. MooveTeam, sales manager Albert Roca
said: “Brazil is a growing destination in terms of leisure and business visitors, making it the ideal potential destination for MooveTeam. We consider this market along with other Latin American destinations as the ‘next step’ for us, as we are already well established in the European and Asian markets. The Brazilian market is now ready to accept these ‘hi-tech’ applications and MooveTeam is ready to establish new partnerships in the area which we hope to do at WTM Latin America.
“WTM Latin America visitors will be able to
experience and interact with the exciting new Google Glass as well as other new wearable technology devices that are planned to be released in the near future.”
