months.” SME’s in particular are having a tough time in terms of top-line sales growth. For many
of these businesses it remains a picture of doom and gloom.” The study also showed that the number of companies in profit (to April 2012) fell to 68%, from 75% a year earlier. “There’s a lack of confidence generally,” he said, “and last year’s bounce- back has not continued. Coming out of the 2009-10 Eurozone recession, trading continues to be very tough. The USA is doing better than Europe, helped by their sales successes in Asia and Latin America. The mood in the US remains more positive.“ 8.F52

EOS camera launch targets movie making
By David Fox
Canon is targeting movie making and high-resolution production with its upcoming EOS C500 4K digital cinema camera, which will be available in both EF- and PL- mount versions.
The 4096x2160-pixel Super 35mm-sized 8.85-megapixel CMOS sensor can output 10-bit uncompressed RAW data via two 3G-SDI ports for external recording at the highest quality. It can also output quad full-HD
(3840x2160), 2K (2048x1080), full HD (1920x1080), and other options.
Its 4K and 2K formats can operate from one to 60fps.
When shooting in 2K, the new camera can output a 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 signal. It can also record 2k or 4K at up to 120fps using a 10-bit YCrCb 4:2:2 mode. In addition to recording
externally, the C500 can simultaneously record 8-bit 4:2:2 internally at 50Mbps in HD to one or two Compact Flash cards, which can be used as a proxy for offline editing or for broadcast HD.
The C500 and C500 PL will cost about $30,000 when they ship next month and join the new entry-level C100, the popular C300, and the EOS-1D C 4K DSLR camera in Canon’s Cinema EOS range. 11.D55
Travel disruption during IBC2012
The Dutch Railway Service (NS) will be carrying out essential engineering works during the weekend of Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September which will affect travel between Schipol airport and the RAI. The train line from Schipol airport to Holendrecht, via the RAI, will be affected, and no trains will run on this line during the weekend. To
help with this, IBC have arranged for additional shuttle buses running from Schipol and surrounding hotels to the RAI, and information hostesses will be available at Schipol for additional travel information. Trams, metro and buses are not affected. For the full schedule and location of the shuttle buses please visit
