Conference Analysis By Chris Forrester

Mike Darcey, BSkyB’s COO, set the scene for the ‘Viewer Behaviour’ session at IBC, stating: “In fact, I believe that not only are they not changing much but they are lazy! However, the proliferation of new screen-based devices in the home demands attention.” Darcey argued that technology is allowing new things to be achieved, helping broadcasters and viewers easily find access to content – but consumers were not themselves changing deep down. “People do want to communicate. They do want to be social. But they want things to be easy,” he said. Darcey said BSkyB was very much focused on tapping into the

Contribution network saves costs

Evertz By Michael Burns

Evertz compression solutions have enabled Rogers Media to create a customised multisite contribution network – allowing the Canadian communications and media company to expand its compressed networks while saving operational costs. Rogers Media has selected the Evertz 3480ENC quad H.264 encoder to deliver 40 channels of high quality HD video with Dolby-E audio compression across Canada. In addition Rogers is using 40 Evertz 7881DEC-H264HD decoders with Dolby-E decoding and frame synchronisation. Evertz VistaLINK network management system is providing realtime visibility, control and monitoring of the entire system spanning the country.

Frank Bruno, VP of TV Engineering, Rogers Media, said the compression solutions had proven to be reliable and scalable, while offering Rogers the flexibility to customise its system. “We are proud to offer a contribution solution that gives our customers freedom of choice by enabling customisation of compression, video bitrate and latency,” said Tony Zare, Evertz product manager. 8.B40

EVS By Michael Burns

C-Cast from EVS is providing a platform for the brand new Canal Football App, a second screen application designed exclusively for Canal Plus subscribers. The unique app provides up-to-the-minute statistics, multicam video

clips of all the highlights and bonus material such as Super Slow Motion action replays in full length.

Seconds after a clip has been created, it’s available on the app’s timeline for review. Users can then select any camera in the stadium, or on the pitch, to view the action from their preferred angle. The new service will run

technology available, and turning it into opportunity for the platform, while at the same time keeping everything easy to access. His message was echoed by Ericsson’s Per Borgklint (SVP/Head of Business Unit Support Solutions). He presented some compelling data on viewing habits and usage. Borgklint said that while there was plenty of talk about so- called ‘cord-cutting’ the reality was that spending on TV is generally stable, and in some markets was growing. “Our research showed that TV spend in China is growing as the country benefited from economic growth.” Ericsson’s latest research showed that on-demand and time-shifting were not only the most important aspects for

viewers, but had grown by 8%. Image quality was important, but the other aspect that had increased significantly in importance was that of viewer

Canal Plus scores with C-Cast

during the live coverage of all 76 headline matches each season for the next four seasons of Ligue 1. It also offers filmed reactions from Canal Plus football

commentators and interaction via social networks. EVS is promoting the C-Cast platform as a complementary benefit to its broadcast clients, demanding few additional overheads, as the operators already working on the EVS live production tools provide all the content and metadata required. C-Cast instantly processes and transfers live multicam media recorded on EVS’ XT/XS production servers, along with descriptive metadata and third-party items (graphics and statistics), direct to iPad and Samsung Galaxy tablets equipped with the app. François-Charles Bideaux,

director of sports production at Canal Plus, explained that

C-Cast was easily integrated into the French broadcaster’s existing infrastructure. “Coupled with the added value that it brings, marginal production costs can be quickly recovered,” he said. “It will increase the engagement of the fans and give them more control over the content they want to see.” 8.B90

It’s IBC Party time! Clare (L) and Anna, both from Accu Weather, the touch screen apps company, met up with old mate John from TSL at last night’s party. “IBC is super…” said Clare, “…like a big, warm front.”

STMicroelectronics, the semi-conductor maker, were enjoying Friday’s shenanigans. Trudy Vanhal (R), security awareness manager, complained: “I have been walking my feet, literally, off my body, to satisfy all those customers!”
