Crystal Vision By Heather McLean

Crystal Vision’s new realtime chroma keyer Safire 3 is making its world debut.

Working with 3Gbps, HD and SD sources, the top of the range Safire 3 is aimed at all live virtual productions, from studio to sport.

As well as being Crystal Vision’s first 3Gbps-

compatible chroma keyer, Safire 3 is said to bring a significant increase in keying performance and features, and includes new key processing controls, as well as colour correction and video

delay functionality, included as an aid to system integration. Safire 3’s enhanced chroma keying uses an extremely sophisticated algorithm that determines how the key is

More valuable than diamonds? Safire 3 may be

derived, giving excellent results with minimal sensitivity to camera noise. It has the ability to key on any backdrop colour and continues to offer the choice of additive or multiplicative keying to suit different situations as well as the ability to work with reflective and transparent objects. The controls for key generation and foreground suppression are separated, allowing the optimisation of each without compromising the other. In addition to the existing fine-tuning controls, numerous new processing features have been developed to add even more realism to the key, says the developer. With convincing edges central to a good looking chroma key, edge softening can reduce the sharp edges often created when applying gain to produce a full amplitude key, while edge shaping allows the actual shape of the key to be changed so that the transition between foreground and background occurs at a different point in the raw key signal. Key noise reduction

reduces Safire 3’s susceptibility to the chroma noise present in every signal without the need to apply excessive gain, and is achieved by two 2D filters: adjustable median; and low- pass softening. 2.B11
