He also stated that the Association’s goal was to even- tually have ten Stadium Partners, all exclusive to their own specific part of the sector. (Full information on the current Stadium Partners can be found online at: www. essma.eu.)

Alain Belsoeur, CEO, Le Havre

Football Club (HAC) Alain Belsouer, CEO of Le Havre football club (HAC) and ESSMA member, then spoke about their iconic new blue stadium, which he explained as being, “the most British of French football clubs”. Belsouer’s very impressive presentation described

how Le Havre AC (HAC) was the first ever football team to be formed in France by the British living and working in the port. The old stadium, Stade Jules Deschaseaux, was built for the 1938 FIFA World Cup™ and obviously offered none of a modern stadium’s revenue-generating facilities, like luxury suites. So although the Club had a great academy and was well known for bringing on tal- ented players, they were not making any money. Some- thing Belsouer realised he had to tackle head on. So, in 1999, on the Club’s relegation from the top divi-

sion, Belsouer and his management team decided that they needed a brand new, next-generation stadium; as a report had showed that a renovation would not be suffi- cient to meet HAC’s vision for the future. HOK as it was then (Populous as it is now) performed the feasibility study for the new stadium through Andrew Williams, the Club’s Project Manager, which showed HAC and more

importantly the local authority, CODAH, and the Major, that a new stadium could bring high returns not just for HAC but also for the local community.

Belsouer gave high praise to Williams, the architec-

tural team of SCAU and KSS, CODAH, the contractor Vinci, and all those involved in delivering the Club’s vision in the form of the new Grande Stade de la CODAH (Grande Stade), which is an iconic and remarkable landmark on the Le Havre cityscape. (A full feature on the project will appear in our 20th Anniversary Part III edition.)

Ward Abdella, Aspire4Sport Ward Abdella from Aspire4Sport then spoke about the part their conference and trade show will play in garnering exposure for ESSMA and its partners in the GCC region. He advised that the 2012 event was going to be even more spectacular than the last, with an international friendly between Spain and another country to be confirmed. Abdella also explained how Aspire4Sport 2012 will

be split into seven sectors, including Build, Logistics, Sports Medicine etc., offering Stadium Managers the opportunity to see the latest in construction. In addition, he advised that delegates would be able to avail of B2B meetings and hosting buyers meetings, with many buy- ers from the GCC region to be present. Beattie then rounded off by thanking everyone for

their attendance and confirming the launch of ESSMA’s first event, to take place October 17-18 in Barcelona, Spain, for Head Groundsmen, with the contribution of the Stadium Partners. ✪
