country and another opportunity to build facilities, develop interest and encourage participation in sport across the entire population.
Building a Sustainable Future In regards to building a sustainable future, Hamdan explained: “Qatar’s approach to the creation of sporting facilities, as outlined in the QSVMP, keeps legacy at the very front of the mind — something that we at Populous know is essential in the planning of any modern Olympic Games.” For London 2012, “embrace the temporary” was the phrase at the heart of the planning stages. In a city with centuries of history and a panoply of iconic structures, the key was to map the Games over the city as it stood. Doha, as a young and rapidly growing city, is in the proc- ess of creating those structures for the first time. All the proposed permanent competition venues exist, are being built or planned. However — and here is where we see the similarities of approach that a sustainable legacy demands — these structures are all multi-pur- pose facilities that can serve both sporting and non- sporting functions, enhancing the sporting and cultural fabric of the city. Populous are pleased to be setting up in such a
dynamic area during this time of cultural change. “We’re delighted to be able to bring such expertise as we’ve gained from London 2012, and other global projects, to

the region,” said Hamdan. “We’re also looking forward to seeing this broad, bold vision unfold.” The next two decades will see unprecedented change
in Qatar, and the region as a whole. A sporting culture would inspire young people throughout the region to embrace Olympic values and encourage a new interest in sports participation, while also creating a historic opportunity for the Olympic Family to embrace this emerging market where the regional population is expected to reach 700 million by 2020. From a sports architecture point of view, the cohesive
infrastructure that’s planned and is, in some cases, already being built, will have significant consequences. Qatar’s commitment to sustainable growth, green sports building typologies and social development will be thor- oughly examined. Not only will it put Qatar on the map internationally, strengthening the position of this proud nation, it will encourage participation in, and enjoyment of, sport in every family. Men, women, boys and girls will benefit physically and mentally — leaving not only a sus- tainable but also a human legacy. ✪
