FULL

PARTICIPATION

Soccerex European Forum Over the following two days, ESSMA mem-

bers and partners participated fully in the Soccerex European Forum, which drew some 1,300 international delegates to Man- chester. Stimulating conference sessions were attended, exhibitor booths visited, networking opportunities exploited, and the splendid Soccerex hospitality enjoyed. Of particular interest was the ESSMA

workshop on the afternoon of the first day. Almost all 60 seats in Studio Two were filled — a demonstrably bigger attendance than for the ESSMA workshop at last year’s Soccerex European Forum. The workshop was moderated by

ESSMA Board member, Stéphane Pottier, of Lagardère Unlimited Stadium Solutions, who opened the session by highlighting the principles behind current French stadi- um developments for the UEFA EURO 2016 football championships. Xavier Daniel from the Local Organising Committee (LOC) pre- sented the host stadia for the tournament, including those in Marseille and Lyon. These were then the subject of detailed presentations. First, Agnes Ankri spoke about the

rebuilding of the Stade Vélodrome and the development of the surrounding infrastruc- ture for the benefit of the City of Marseille. Then celebrated architect, John Barrow

of Populous, presented the new 58,000- seat stadium for Olympique Lyonnais, which features 17% corporate seating, even higher than the 15% at Arsenal’s Emirates stadium. He explained how view- ing quality and ambiance for all patrons

were outstanding, and as the site was out of town they had built a new light rail link and new bus links, as well as 7,000 parking spaces. The mantra was flexibility for sus- tainability and legacy summed up in the three words: reduce; reuse; recycle.

ESSMA Members Participation Five of ESSMA’s eight stadium partners

were present over all three days: Terraplas, DESSO GrassMaster, Philips Lighting, Bertelè, and Lagardère Unlimited Stadium Solutions, while two more attended the Etihad Stadium seminar: Aware Manager and EVERRIS. Media partners PanStadia and Stadium and Arena Management were also in attendance. The Soccerex European Forum hosted

two significant meetings involving ESSMA. First was an ESSMA Board meeting, at which decisions were taken to ensure the added value to members continued to be enhanced. Second was the EVMI (Event and Venue Management Institute) annual meeting, attended by John Beattie and Dimitri Huygen, which cemented the edu- cational partnership between the two organisations. ESSMA will endorse and provide faculty for EVMI’s training pro- grammes, accredited by the University of Greenwich, while EVMI will recommend ESSMA membership to its students. All in all, the three days in Manchester,

in partnership with Soccerex, provided exceptional value for ESSMA members and partners, and will no doubt become an annual event in all members’ diaries. ✪
