early on that a dome was structurally the most efficient form to achieve the extended spans required to cover this area. In addition, our brief had asked for a retractable roof to provide shade to the spectators during events and our calculations showed we would add less steel to support the moving roof using a dome structure than we would with a cantilever roof structure.” Lewis continued: “Externally, our key masterplan objec-


tive was to find a form for the stadium roof that would complement the existing architectural icon of the SIS building and for us the dome won on this score as well. Our renders of the two building silhouetted above the water line convinced us that we had generated what will become one of Singapore’s most impressive skylines — the simple dome form of the new National Stadium juxta- posed against the inverted ‘peaked’ roof of the the Singapore Indoor Stadium building.” (Please see Figure 2.) Aside from providing an ideal setting for the key sporting events soccer and athletics, Singapore is also


developing its great potential as a host to other large- scale spectator events. The stadium, with its huge dome, will provide a dramatic setting for concerts and provide a projection surface for interactive sound and light displays. The west end of the stadium is open-ended, provid-


ing spectators with a breathtaking view across the city. Events like concerts can be hosted with the iconic sky- line of Singapore as their backdrop and the facility will provide a perfect setting for the city state’s own National Day Parade.


Integration of Bowl & Roof When completed, the National Stadium will be the only stadium in the world that is custom-built to host football, rugby, cricket and athletics events all in one venue. In relation to the integration of the stadium bowl and roof, Lewis explained: “This combination of sports ➲
