The Green Sports Alliance The Green Sports Alliance, founded in the
spring of 2011, has brought together industry experts, teams and venues to cre- ate a resource for achieving substantial savings, generate great PR, and enhance environmental performance all at once. The annual Green Sports Alliance Summit in September brings together experts from all aspects of the industry to share innova- tive programmes and best practices. The EPA’s Energy Star and Waste Wise pro- grammes provide resources for improving your building’s effectiveness and saving money on operations, which positively impacts your bottom line. The key to starting a programme is keep it simple and get support from your organisation by forming a green team. Look at ‘low hanging fruit’; items that you can readily control, do not take a lot of effort to implement and generate instant
savings and a quick return on your invest- ment. Some of these ideas include:
◆ Get an energy audit. The audit will identify other ideas for instant and long-term savings
◆ Increase recycling to reduce waste hauling costs
◆ Sub meter your water. Metering allows you to manage your use and find ways to improve efficiency
◆ Adopt green cleaning practices
◆ Green your supply chain. There are vendors with a green product who are ripe for sponsorships
◆ Promote public transit for your fans
◆ Look for renewable energy opportunities, like a third party lease
◆ Retrofit your lighting. LED light bulbs in your suites generate savings on energy costs and labour costs by eliminating ongoing bulb replacement
◆ Engage your employees, from the housekeeping crew to the maintenance and ticketing staff. They will be the ones who have the best ideas for saving energy, water, and waste

The International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM) is the world's largest professional association dedicated to issues relevant to the management of public assembly venues. If you have a meaningful and authentic green programme at your venue, there are now numerous opportunities for sponsor- ships/partnerships. Work with your mar- keting team to develop a strategy for new and existing partners. Even if you do not have a green initiative programme, you can develop one and tap into these oppor- tunities. Creating green initiatives can be as simple as a call to your local utility. ✪
