Elks National Veterans Service Commission


Alaska State Elks Association held its third annual sport fishing event as part of the Alaska Elks Wounded Veterans Project and treated 77 troops and four support staff from Fort Richardson and one soldier from Fort Wainwright to two days of fishing, accommodations, and meals that included a formal banquet and a barbecue. In addition, association lodge members processed the 1,400 pounds of fish caught over the week- end and shipped each participant his or her own catch and gave each participant a fleece jacket and a travel bag containing a number of small gifts. The Soldotna Lodge contributed $1,350 in cash and food toward the weekend’s events, while the Haines Lodge contributed $250 in cash and the Homer Lodge contributed $500 in food. The Palmer, Eagle River, and Kenai Lodge members helped prepare gift bags, serve food, and clean up afterward. The association also held a drawing and gave a rifle to each of six winners and a fishing and bear- viewing trip to a seventh. The remain- ing troops received various other gifts including fishing gear and sculptures.


Garden Grove, CA, Lodge donated the use of an outdoor park area to AMVETS to hold a Spirit of ’45 Day celebration of the 65th anniversary of V-J Day.


Hemet, CA, and Riverside, CA, Lodges held a Walking for Veterans fund-raiser, during which members walked the nearly 40 miles between the two lodges and raised $1,000 to
