A Welcome Voice from Home On September 23, 1944, Bethany Station began broadcasting twenty- four hours a day. It was the most powerful broadcasting relay station in the world and the only one capable of reaching into the darkest corners of a world at war. During World War II Bethany Station not only sent the truth of the day to war-ravaged countries, it also served American servicemen. Charlie Stinger, who now helps with restoration at the Bethany Station site, recalls: “I was serving in Italy at the beginning of World War II, and I would listen to VOA. When I returned home it meant a great deal to be asked to work at the Bethany
