What are the biggest challenges facing the media and entertainment industry? As a manufacturer attending broadcast exhibitions overseas (IBC, NAB, BIRTV, etc) we see quite a difference in the priorities set by different members of the media and entertainment market, and we feel that one of the biggest challenges is audience fragmentation due to disparate types of consumption (from enjoying short-form/mobile content at home to experiencing huge VR/interactive content at a venue). This is somewhat welcome for a small-scale technology company like us, as our priority has been to serve the so-called high-end niche, but it doesn’t solve the overall problems in the media industry.
How is your company helping its customers to address the challenges faced by the media and entertainment industry? In a relatively small fragment of market looking for high-
resolution and high frame rate, we provide solutions for high-end niche applications and producers currently using 8K/HFR technology. But high- resolution, high frame rate production isn’t just a technical upgrade, it’s a strategic lever to deliver immersive, personalised and premium experiences to segmented audiences who value quality and unique content.
What are the main areas of focus for your company during IBC2025? We introduced a live 240p camera that records 8K by 2K at last year’s IBC – and we are currently developing a full 8K 240p camera. Our goal in developing this product is not simply to target a specifi c section of the market. It is generally agreed that higher frame rate provides a more signifi cant viewer-perceived quality improvement rather than simply increasing resolution. During the development of this camera, we
too found that video featuring relatively quick movements looked better in down-converted 1080/240p compared with (also down-converted) 4K/60p. Astrodesign is also working on a new application that will extract vertical images from live video, perfect for companies targeting the mobile content market. We hope to facilitate discussions about using high-resolution/HFR as a versatile production and master creation format.
What are your priorities for the next 12 months?
Our number one priority is to accelerate development of applications and use cases to utilise our 8K+/HFR technology to meet challenges in the current media industry. This includes development of a range of converters and software to make high-resolution/HFR more user-friendly for effi cient and versatile programme production in a fragmented market.
