#IBC2023
Mathias Eckert, Senior Vice President & General Manager, EMEA and APAC, Imagine Communications
What are the biggest
challenges facing the media and entertainment industry? Like many other markets, the media industry faces significant challenges amid ongoing economic fluctuations and rising inflation rates, compelling our customers to continually adapt and find more efficient ways of working. But I believe that the pressure to become more efficient and embrace smarter workflows presents both a challenge and an opportunity. It urges broadcasters to explore diverse distribution channels and alternative methods of content delivery that have the potential to open up new avenues for growth and success.
How is your company helping your customers address these challenges?
Many of the industry’s current challenges – the need to find more efficient ways of working, for example – can be addressed
with IP technology, and Imagine has actively led the way towards widespread IP adoption. We were a founding member of AIMs (Alliance for IP Media Solutions), helping facilitate broad implementation of SMPTE ST2110, which has become the industry’s de facto standard for migrating from SDI to the next generation of IP-based workflows.
What do you think are the main drivers in your market sector? The key driver in our sector continues to stem from evolving consumer behaviours, driven by generational shifts, the emergence of new digital-first players and the demand for seamless content availability across devices. Linear television remains relevant, and its longevity is assured. But the shift in consumption patterns and content platforms means broadcasters are under pressure to adjust their budgets and
overnight when it still meets their needs. So the key theme at IBC2023 will be hybrid workflows – specifically, technology that allows broadcasters to optimise their existing capital investments, leverage the benefits of both on-premises and cloud solutions, and make a gradual transition from one operational world to the next.
business strategies to cater to the end-user’s expectations.
Which trends or themes do you expect to emerge during IBC2023
People come to IBC to see the latest innovations, but real-world factors will drive purchasing and deployment decisions more than ever this year. Financially speaking, it isn’t practical for broadcasters to simply abandon existing on-prem equipment
CINEMATIC DRONE AIMS TO INSPIRE NEW CREATIVITY DJI
BY DAVID FOX
Claimed to be the “ultimate cinema drone”, the Inspire 3 from DJI is an all-in-one full-frame 8K drone designed for top-level movie production. The lightweight, integrated design includes a 161° ultra-wide field of view night-vision first person video camera for the operators, while its O3 Pro transmission and control system claim “best-in-class” flight performance. It supports both RTK-powered Waypoint Pro, for precisely repeatable flight routes, and omnidirectional sensing to perform flights more safely. It also has a 3D Dolly mode, to simulate crane, cable cam or dolly moves.
DJI’s new Spotlight Pro intelligent tracking uses machine learning to offer pilots single-object recognition, so they can focus on the flight while the gimbal camera stays focused on the subject. This enables them to shoot complex shots, even in single-pilot mode. The Zenmuse X9-8K air gimbal camera features DJI’s latest image processing system, CineCore 3.0, supporting internal recording of up to 8K/25fps CinemaDNG video as well as 8K/75fps Apple ProRes Raw, with 14+ stops of dynamic range. The Inspire 3’s new, hot-swappable batteries provide flight time of up to 28 minutes, at flight speeds of up to 94kmph, 8mps ascent and descent speed, and a dive speed up to 10mps. 12.C57
What are your priorities for the next 12 months? Imagine’s priority for the next 12 months is simple: deliver for our customers – wherever they are on the technology adoption curve, from SDI to on-prem ST2110 to fully cloud-based systems. This means continuing to build open, standards-based solutions and work with the right partners to deliver best-in-class systems that benefit our customers who are making important decisions about where their business is heading over the next few years. 2.A15
