#IBC2023 WELCOME TO IBC2023

After a hugely successful 2022 edition – the first in-person show to take place since 2019 – it’s a delight to welcome you all back to Amsterdam, the world forum for the media and entertainment industry.

Once again, we have drawn on the expertise of our six owners (IABM, IEEE, IET, SCTE, SMPTE and RTS), as well as the insight of other industry partners and experts, to produce an event that captures the full spectrum of creativity and business innovation taking place in media today. Providing an invaluable opportunity to discover new solutions and discuss where the industry is headed next, IBC2023 combines a comprehensive exhibition with diverse and stimulating conference content, as well as numerous opportunities to meet and network. As media is an industry whose phenomenal rate of change has very few parallels, it follows that we seek to introduce fresh features to the show every year. New for 2023 is an extensive esports offering that includes a dedicated zone in Hall 8. Occupying almost 500sqm, this immersive space will showcase the latest in esports production workflows and technology via multiple production set-ups, a partner zone and a networking area. Also, on Monday, there will be a full day of sessions in the Showcase Theatre dedicated to exploring developments at the intersection of gaming and media. It should come as no surprise to regular show visitors to read that Content Everywhere – the exhibition and conference area that showcases emerging technologies for multi-platform delivery, OTT and the monetisation of content – has been one of the most rapidly growing elements of IBC for some years. This year, CE’s presence expands once again with the addition of more exhibition space and a second stage, all located in Hall 5. Panels will discuss everything from online distribution and monetisation techniques to the latest development in the extremely dynamic FAST (Free Ad Supported Television) sector. One of the biggest strengths of IBC has always been its ability to take the long view on the future of media technology, and both nurture and support the projects and partnerships required to deliver it. So it was a logical move to establish the Accelerator Programme in 2019, providing an annual framework for agile and collaborative projects that address complex M&E business and technology challenges. Every year we are treated to a selection of fascinating and far-reaching Accelerators, and 2023 is no exception, with subjects including 5G motion capture for live performance and animation, gallery agnostic live media

production, and synthetic humans for entertainment and accessibility. All eight of this year’s projects will be showcased in sessions on the Innovation Stage – the complete schedule can be found on page 41.

“In an uncertain world, it’s fantastic that we all have this annual opportunity to meet and discuss the present and future of media technology”

Since our industry is arguably going through its most intense period of technological and operational change since the early 2000s, it only follows that we have devised what I believe to be one of our strongest and most comprehensive content programmes to date. Focused around three content pillars – Transformative Tech, Shifting Business Models and People & Purpose – the schedule spotlights thought leaders from Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Global, Sony Pictures Entertainment and many other prominent organisations. In particular, I would like to draw your attention to the Show Keynote on Saturday (13:00-13:45 in the Forum), to be given by creative technologist and consultant Marco Tempest. With roles

including Director’s Fellow at the MIT Media Lab and a creative consultancy at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the MagicLab.nyc founder will examine the exciting possibilities of ‘Virtual Production & the Metaverse: A future where everyone is invited to play’. Also of note is the much-anticipated return of the free-to-attend Changemaker Programme, which will explore topics including gender equality, advancing sustainability and inclusive technology, during Sunday and Monday. On a related note, the Social Impact Awards – which form part of this year’s Changemaker Programme – will take place in the Forum on Sunday at 16:30. The Innovation Awards will also be announced on the same day, at 18:00 in the Premier Lounge. Turn to page 28 for more details on these events. With Halls 3 and 4 back in action this year, and 20% more exhibitor space than in 2022, IBC2023 marks the return of the industry’s most influential event to full pre-pandemic strength. In an uncertain world, it’s fantastic that we all have this annual opportunity to meet and discuss the present and future of media technology. I hope you have a wonderful and rewarding time.
