TP: Evonik is partnering with Unilever for the rhamnolipid biosurfactant plant. Will you only be making these products for Unilever? YH: Unilever is our partner for hand dishwashing applications but our products will be available for other applications with other customers. Some clients have launched


micellar water, skin care creams and toothpaste with our biosurfactants.


TP: Is there a timeline for review and possible expansion of the plant? YH: We will start production in the second half of 2023 and there will be a ramp up to maximum capacity in the course of 2024. That’s the intention. It will take some time to


build additional capacity but we can gain capacity either by process improvement or by adding additional manufacturing sites. I cannot give you a timeline


today, but it’s really clear that Evonik is ready to continue our investment as the market develops. This is our intention.

TP: What else is Evonik investing in, in relation to sustainability? YH: Evonik is transforming its portfolio to have more sustainability and more specialties. More sustainable specialties! That’s being done through


divestment of commodity type products, and through reinvestment of that money to lower our carbon footprint. That strategy also applies to our care solutions business line. So, we are increasing our


share of specialties in our portfolio and we are also improving our portfolio from a sustainability standpoint to offer our customers what they need in order to achieve their sustainability goals. Our customers need sustainable ingredients and that’s the role we play. Sustainability has many different aspects but I think the two most important for the personal care industry are biodegradability and carbon footprint.
