Hard Rock Loses Hellinikon Casino Appeal

Greece’s highest administrative court has rejected an appeal from Hard Rock that it had been wrongfully excluded from the Hellinikon airport casino tender

Te ruling gives the green light for Mohegan Gaming to proceed with its license award

GREECE LICENSING

Following a previous rejection in March, Greece’s highest administrative court has rejected an appeal from Hard Rock International that it had been wrongfully excluded from the tender for a casino at the former Hellinikon airport. Hard Rock had been confident its court challenge would see the company become the license holder. It had claimed it was 'absolutely laughable' that its expertise was being questioned, adding that 'it was wrongly disqualified' due to 'unfair and improper practice.'

Sources had claimed that Hard Rock has missed the deadline to supply a letter of guarantee, didn’t have enough construction experience to get the casino up and operating and did not have enough financing, all of which were challenged by the Florida-based casino group. Hard Rock claims the seven-member gaming commission made 'serious irregularities' throughout the process.

However, the ruling now gives the country’s gaming commission (EEEP) the green light to proceed with the licence award to US-based Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE).

Greek Development and Investments Minister Adonis Georgiadis said: “Te more some continue to accuse and fuss, the more the Greek justice system vindicates the fully transparent procedures we have followed. Te way for the continuation of the casino tender has opened. Full speed ahead.”

Mario Kontomerkos, President and CEO MGE, said: “Mohegan Gaming Entertainment (MGE) fully maintains its commitment to make Greece the leading destination for entertainment and business conferences in Europe through the creation of Inspire Athens. We understood that Inspire Athens was meant to symbolise more than an integrated resort. It is our hope that Inspire Athens would be the catalyst that sparks the entire development of the Hellenikon area into the coveted Athenian Riviera, forever redefining the modern identity of Greece.”

In collaboration with Greece-based GEK TERNA, Mohegan Gaming plans to build its INSPIRE Athens project with a luxury hotel, entertainment venues, convention center, shopping, dining, a casino with 120 gaming tables and 1,200 slot machines.

GVC has completed the migration of Ladbrokes on to the group’s proprietary technology platform. Having acquired Ladbrokes Coral in 2018, this milestone now completes the migration of all of the acquired brands, with Ladbrokes, Coral, Gala Bingo, Gala Casino and Gala Spins now all on the GVC platform. Te Ladbrokes migration is the largest that GVC has completed and represents one of the final parts of what has been the most complex integration process in the gambling industry to date. It has been executed on time, on budget and with no disruption to the 25m Ladbrokes Coral customer accounts that have been moved across. Furthermore, the final migration of 12.5m customers has been completed at a time when all of the teams involved in the process have been working remotely.

UK – Gaming operator, the Rank Group, has led the way in delivering a series of charity and well-being initiatives to show its ongoing support to the key workers of the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through both Mecca Bingo and Grosvenor Casinos, the Rank Group has undertaken outreach directly to all local emergency services, and reached out to local MPs to help establish relationships with local charities, schools, and the prison service.

The initiatives and campaigns organised by Mecca Bingo and Grosvenor Casinos include free lunches for Blue Light card holders, the UK’s emergency service workers, at seven Mecca clubs across the UK and five Grosvenor casinos. Grosvenor Salford reached an impressive milestone, delivering 1,000 hot meals to frontline staff, including NHS workers and fire stations, with Grosvenor Casino Dundee extending the free lunch offer to include local charities, school meals and hot food for the vulnerable. Free meals were also provided for vulnerable groups and the homeless across all Mecca clubs, with the total number of free meals provided by Mecca reaching 30,000.

Mecca Bingo and Grosvenor Casinos also teamed up with online parking marketplaces YourParkingSpace and Just Park, to offer NHS and emergency workers free parking at over 30 Mecca clubs, with nearly 2,500 spaces on offer. Grosvenor offered free parking to NHS staff at over 1,000 of their parking spots in the UK. Building on the £2.5m raised for the Rank Group’s partner charity, Carers Trust, Mecca has continued to drive the fundraising effort during this period, providing care packs for workers in this critical field.

Grosvenor Casinos staff also worked hard to raise money for good causes. John Zokas, a casino manager at Grosvenor Glasgow Riverboat launched a charity fundraiser in which team members from around the country would collectively walk the distance from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for Carer's Trust. Launched on 'Giving Tuesday', the initiative saw the Grosvenor Casinos’ team each walk a certain number of steps to add up to the approximately 1,748,000 steps it would take to travel the journey. The team’s efforts paid off with £1,376 being raised for the Carers Trust.

UK – Inspired Entertainment saw its first quarter revenue increase by 55.4 per cent year-over-year, to $52.3m. Revenue increases were driven by $27.4m in revenue from the recently acquired Novomatic Gaming Technology Group. However, this increase was significantly offset by the lag in sales and temporary suspension of the Company's land-based business due to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic and the decrease in revenue in the UK LBO market from the FOBT stakes decrease.
