GAME DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT KALAMBA GAMES

Kalamba Games: driving retention and engagement

G3 interviews Andy Sekula, Head of Games, about the intricacies of advanced player analytics and how behavioural monitoring shapes the game design process.

Could you tell us more about Kalamba's in-game features?

Andy Sekula Head of Games, Kalamba Games

Andy Sekula is the Head of Games at Kalamba Games and joined the supplier’s Malta office in March 2019. He has over 10 years’ experience in game design and previously held product manager roles at various gaming companies. In his current role at Kalamba he works with a team of talented artists, designers and developers to create a fun and engaging gaming experience.

Our core features are HyperBet and HyperBonus which are included in a lot of our games. With HyperBet, players can increase the base bet amount of the game as well as the volatility. By providing those options, players can customise their experience, based on their skills and preferences. By offering low bets with small but more frequent wins, we can attract the causal player, while higher bets and bigger wins cater for the VIP player, all offered in one game. With HyperBonus, we provide a shortcut into the bonus round which is usually only accessible after landing a certain number of symbols on the reels.

In our popular title Caribbean Anne launched last year, we introduced a new feature called LuckyLoops which is a new collection of mechanics based on the success of the first nine spins, the tenth spin will offer something exciting to the player. In our upcoming game Blazing Bull, we will also introduce progressive free spins that will give the player more rewards the longer they play. All our signature features help increase retention and engagement rates.

When was the idea for the Hyperbonus and Hyperbet concepts conceived? What was the inspiration?

Te idea was born in late 2018, two years after Kalamba was founded. Te main inspiration was the feedback we were getting from operator partners that our games really resonated with experienced VIP players but risked alienating more casual players because of the complexity and volatility. So, we wanted to create a solution to this problem by making sure the games could be tailored to this player type. Some players prefer to play features only and with HyperBonus they can now do that. It was about tackling the demands of specific segment of players. Both our signature features widen the appeal of the games to all types of demographic.

How does giving players the ability to customise their gaming experience boost average stakes and engagement rates?

We try to make the minimum bet as low as possible in our games to attract all players. What HyperBet does is act as a funnel for us as once we get players in, they will start with the base game but when they get more familiar and feel
