A summary of the year
The fantastic staff at Hampshire Hospitals achieved some amazing things in 2016/17. I joined the Trust in April 2017 and I am hugely proud to be part of an organisation which delivers such great care in what are very challenging times.
Like the rest of the NHS, we experienced unprecedented demand on our services, particularly over the winter period. We looked after more poorly people than in any previous year and we continued to have a high number of medically fit patients waiting in our hospital beds.
For much of the year, too many patients experienced longer than four hour waits in our emergency departments. A whole raft of interventions were put in place, and these really took hold from February 2017. As a result, we were able to comply with the target of admitting or discharging 95 per cent of patients from our emergency departments within four hours for the rest of the year, despite the fact that March was our busiest month ever for emergency admissions.
All the while, activity in outpatients, diagnostics and elective procedures, including cancer care, continued to meet the relevant national targets, which makes a huge difference to our patients.
Looking ahead, the pressures on our services remain, but we are well placed to respond to them.
What makes me think this? I may not have been chief executive here for very long, but I have already met so many dedicated, inspiring people and heard about so many innovative ways the Trust is improving services and the care we provide.

It will take a real team effort for us to achieve our goals over the coming year. We will need to ensure that we work closely and collaboratively, not only within our own organisation, but also with our partners in community and social care. We will continue to be actively involved in the Local Care System as we look to foster closer co-operative working with all of our colleagues in health and social care. We will also continue to work closely with our commissioners when it comes to transforming acute care in north and mid Hampshire and our strategy to deliver care locally where possible and centrally where necessary.
Our financial situation will also continue to be challenging, but we are in a good position, having met all of our financial targets last year. This was another outstanding achievement and we will do all we can to ensure that we continue to hit our financial targets, while at the same time providing the high standards of patient care that we pride ourselves on.
It’s a challenging time for the NHS, but we have always put patients at the heart of what we do and we will continue to do that.
