Welcome
I am extremely proud that Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust delivered on our quality, performance and financial targets at the end of 2016/17 despite considerable challenges faced by the NHS nationally and locally.
This performance was the result of significant and sustained effort from our staff and partners working together and reflects our total commitment to delivering high-quality patient care as our number one priority.
Many of our staff achieved regional and national recognition for their innovative work. Locally, we received 2,716 WOW! nominations for staff who live our values, demonstrating their care, compassion and dedication to our patients. Other highlights of the year included a visit from His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge to Basingstoke hospital, where he met staff involved in a programme to support armed forces veterans considering a career with the NHS.
Following the retirement of our long-standing chief executive Mary Edwards in December, Alex Whitfield was appointed as our new chief executive to start in April 2017. Building on the legacy of an outstanding organisation, Alex and the senior team will ensure we remain clinically led and patient-focused while Alex will also bring new insight and new ideas. My thanks go to Dr Andrew Bishop for his custodianship of HHFT during his tenure as interim chief executive. We saw changes in our Board of Directors too, saying goodbye after nine years to Nicola Horlick, our senior independent director, and welcoming new non-executive directors Jane Tabor and Paul Musson. We thanked outgoing Governors for their contribution to the Trust and welcomed our new Governors elected to the Council by our members.
The achievements you will read about in this Annual Review reflect the commitment of all our staff at every level over the past year. Under the leadership of our new chief executive, our number one priority will continue to be to provide high-quality patient care to the people living and working in our area.
Elizabeth J Padmore, Chairman 3
